Magic Bullet plugins they look good but on my machine takes forever to render.

People always say to buy new software but my advice to you would be just to adjust the levels, it can give it a very good film-like edge. It will help make "greens" look more green etc, it will give foreground elements more contrast over others. It doesn't work in every instance, but if you really don't want to spend a penny (and why should you have to!) then this is the way forward!
Here's an example. The same clip plays twice, the first one has no levels and the second one has levels added. They can be found in the video filters.

I think that the biggest step towards film is shooting in 24p.

No...The biggest step is shooting film.
At times I shoot film at 30fps and it still looks like film. The frames rate gimmick is just to get people to buy video cameras. Shoot film and you will get the film look. Don't make video look like film and film look like video. It is just bad.
Film isn't that expensive. If you look at the costs of HD and compare it to film you are even if not less on the side of film.
