Hello, a few months ago I posted a message on this forum asking for ideas for a film to show at a cinema in Cardiff to raise money for the first ever Welsh monument to conscientious objectors. Thank you to those who replied, you're suggestions were invaluable. The Fund raising night is now all set to go, please see below for details:
Conscientious Objectors? Film Showing:
Friday 6 May, 8.30pm, Chapter Arts Centre, Canton, Cardiff
Two short films will be shown to explore the issues of conscientious objection.
Refusing to Kill (45 mins) recounts the experiences of conscientious objectors around the world. It includes veterans? accounts of how their lives have been destroyed by war - including by Gulf War Syndrome. It also highlights the abuse that conscientious objectors have received from fellow soldiers.
Contempt of Conscience (12 mins) sets out the case for allowing those with a conscientious objection to war to have the military part of their taxes spent on peace-building initiatives. It follows the progress of the Peace Tax 7 who are campaigning for a change in UK law to remove compulsory ?war tax?. With Mark Thomas, Dame Anita Roddick and music by Billy Bragg.
Simon Heywood, a member of the Peace Tax Seven will be available to answer any questions. Details from [email protected] or www.chapter.org
International Conscientious Objectors? Day
Sunday 15 May 2005, 12.00 ? 2.00pm, Temple of Peace, Cathays Park, Cardiff
The first ever Welsh monument to conscientious objectors will be unveiled in the National Garden of Peace. It will carry the bilingual inscription:
If the right to life is the first of all human rights, being the one on which all other rights depend, the right to refuse to kill must be the second.
There will be short speeches from Ray Davies, CND Cymru and representatives of Refusing to Kill.Net. Joe Jenkins, the director of Contempt of Conscience also hopes to attend. Followed by songs from C?r Cochion and an inexpensive lunch.
Cynefin y Werin - the All Wales Network for Peace and Global Justice

Andy
