Andy Shmushkin</center>
Hello friends and others,
For years now there are those who have encouraged me to get out of the
performance wing of the music business and throw my energies into furthering
a more charismatic artist's career. I have resisted this, preferring to work
through The City Limits, on a case-by-case basis, to help my pop ghetto
peers in their pursuit of artistic and financial fulfillment. This has
necessarily been a part-time job since the bulk of my time has been devoted
to the near impossible task of managing my own career. Yet, as rewarding as
this has been, I have found that I am more effective, and happier, when
working to promote someone else's art. But who? Much as I love and respect
the people I have worked with in the past, I have never met an artist who
was a perfect fit. That is, until now...
Andy Shmushkin is a cross between James Taylor and Lenny Bruce. Like Lenny
Bruce he is a provocative and humorous teacher, and like James Taylor, his
songs are catchy and extremely sweet. Words fail to do him justice. He must
be heard to be grasped and all I can say is that if you ever had a passing
fancy for my work (which is how you ended up on this list, i hope) then you
really MUST sample Shmushkin. His message is everything that I have tried to
say in my songs but MORE. This is definitely due, in part, to his
collaboration with Minneapolis pop wizard, Willie Wisely, and much help from
National Lampoon and Andy Dick, but I think there is something more. He has
a voice that makes even the creepiest corners of the human psyche somehow
brighter and more bearable. I think that this is both what has endeared his
recordings to listeners around the country, AND what offends those who would
try and silence him.
You can listen to two of his songs, with accompanying videos, at:
http://www.shmushkin.net
The purpose of this e-mail is to introduce you to Shmushkin, and to give you
all the opportunity to attend a very special evening with Shmushkin and his
band. They will be performing at The Guerilla Pop Night at The International
Pop Overthrow Festival in Hollywood, California on Tuesday, July 22nd at
Spaceland. This will be Shmushkin's first public appearance and I have to
say that he needs all of the support he can get. He, like a lot of star
types, is what I call "reality deficient". Only an audience can bring him to
life, and the wrong sort of audience the first time out could really damage
him. That's the other thing. There is the threat of a protest by an
anti-Shmushkinite faction which has been generating a lot of ugly rumors
about my client. If they show up it would be really good for Shmushkin to
have some friends to back him up and shout down the shouters. This is
especially important because we will be filming this show for a Shmushkin TV
special for The National Lampoon network.
Of course, Shmushkin isn't the only reason to attend Spaceland on July 22.
The bill is packed to bursting with some of my favorite artists on the
planet like...
8PM - Sheila Nicholls (http://www.essexgirl.com/sheilanicholls/) - Sheila is
a piano balladeer in the mold of Ben Folds, but with a poetic conscience
that is more akin to Ani DiFranco, or her countryman, Billy Bragg. She is
originally from England but has spent most of the last decade touring and
recording in the U.S. She once again earns her indie cred in my book by
agreeing to open this bill. As the only major label act (Hollywood Records),
and the owner and operator of her own indie label (Essex Girl), she would
probably headline any other show of this kind but, in support of the lesser
known acts on the bill, she is opening the night. Let's hope her legion of
fans stick around to see...
8:30PM - Bart Davenport (http://www.bartdavenport.com/) - Bart is a bay area
institution. He fronted two of my favorite bands of the 90's; The Loved
Ones, a mod blues outfit, and The Kinetics, a hipster soul revue, both of
which were distinguished by his canny intelligence as a lyricist and his
distinctive singing voice. His self-titled first solo record on Paris
Caramel Records extends these qualities and adds Bart's exquisite guitar
playing and pop production chops. Bart will be performing at IPO with a
band. I'm really glad he's going to be there so that he can meet...
9PM - Willie Wisely (http://www.wiselylive.com/) - I've already mentioned
him as Shmushkin's producer, but Willie Wisely is so much more. Aside from
putting out two of my favorite CD's of the 90's ("She" and "Turbosherbet",
both produced by John Fields), Willie is a much in demand sideman, working
with artists like Anna Waronker, Tracy Speuhler, and Andy Dick. Most
recently Willie appeared in the musical "Lovelace" by Anna Waronker. On the
22nd he will no doubt be playing songs from the CD he is currently working
on with Linus of Hollywood for Franklin Castle records. Who knows? He might
even be convinced to sit in with...
9:30PM - Shmushkin (http://www.shmushkin.net/) - I've already told you. You
must come and see Shmushkin. For his sake, and for your own. Personally, I
think he is the perfect opening act for...
10PM - Candypants
(http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip...3007/lisa.html) - Candypants
are, hands down, my favorite discovery at last year's IPO. Their self-titled
CD released on Sympathy For The Record Industry is in my opinion, a pop
masterpiece. I know that such hyperbole will make Candypants' leader, Lisa
Jenio, blush and probably hit me, but the fact remains that she and her
collaborators (primarily George Wood and Danny McGough) delivered a record
that is at once original and steeped in rock history. A perfect balance of
indie-fi and pop production, it sounds like Ronnie Spector fronting The
Attractions, but the real star of the show is Jenio's lyrics. Like a modern
Dorothy Parker she cuts at sexual hypocrisy with grace, humor, and enough
boy love to endear her to pop geeks everywhere. She's also got a great ear
for talent so I know she's gonna love...
10:30 - The Mona Reels (http://monareels.com/) - The Mona Reels are my
current favorite band in Olympia, Washington. This might be because two of
my favorite musicians to work with (Chad Austinson and Jon Merithew) are in
the band. Chad played in my band, The Previous, when we toured with Bob
Wiseman, and Jon used to play in my old favorite Olympia band, The Noses. He
currently plays with C Average (Kill Rock Stars) as well as with The Mona
Reels. Still, the brain behind The Mona Reels is wunderkind, Peter David
Connelly, and it his voice as a singer and writer that distinguishes The
Mona Reels from the usual Olympia, Washington super group. I have no idea
what he's going to think about...
11PM - Man With Pussycat
(http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Lot/6200/wayne.html) - This is the one
act on the bill that I haven't seen yet but I've heard the music and visited
the link above, and I have to agree with IPO's organizer David Bash that
they are the perfect addition to this bill. I can't wait to see them, or
him, and I'm sure they or he are psyched to be opening for...
11:30PM - Andy Dick (http://www.andydick.com) - Andy really needs no
introduction. He is probably the most famous ******* of his generation, and
for this generation, that's really saying something. The fact that he's not
really that much of an ******* doesn't matter. He's a pro and when the time
comes for him to hit the stage with his band, The ******* of The Century, no
matter how sweet or friendly he may be feeling at the time, he will expose
his dark comedic self and probably skull-**** the nearest audience member he
can get a hold of. There may be vomit involved. There will almost certainly
be nudity, and enough profanity to make the anti-Shmushkinites ears bleed.
As with Sheila, it is incredibly cool and un-******* like of him to agree to
close the show so that his fans will get a chance to see the lesser known
acts before him.
Well, that's the deal. If you aren't in LA you should come from wherever you
are to see this little bit of history in the making.
Once again,
the show info is:
