Andy,
Is this for your Gretsch kit? If so, the Aquarian's don't fit I really wanted to use the TC Aquarian heads which I love so much.
I'm using coated G1 top and clear G1 bottom with very nice (Jeff) results. I'm also playing around with clear emp on top and diplomat on the bottom for that punchy attack with nice tone. Also, I tend to tune my toms on the low side. For Tony Williams type tuning, the G1 or Amb top and bottom really make those toms sing.
Well, that's been my experience so far with the Gretsch toms.

Thanks for all of the feedback you guys. Danny, yes I was thinking of these for that Gretsch kit (the Remo's just don't seat well on the original bearing edges). I should check out those Aquarians.

IMO the thinner, the better and more resonant.
Recently I've been using Aquarian heads when I can, they have the best hoops and durability.
Eventually I would like to play around with thicker weight bottom heads, coated heads and even small 1 or 2" air vents in them just to see how they'd sound (like a bass drum).

Randy, do Remos fit on your Square Badge Gretsch drums? They don't on mine.

CBrady knows what I'm talking about the Aquarian not fitting on my Gretsch shells.
Remember, I have the stop sign badge era shells, which run just a little big. Aquarian makes a special line called Vintage series where the collar is not as thick, so sit better on the older drums.

I would use remo ambassadors or diplomats. The dips i would use for a more open tone, but that isn't always the best sound. It really depends on your genre/type of drum.

Andy, yes they do, but in all fairness, Bill Detamore had recut my edges back in 84 so any head will fit this kit.
The snare alone is so sharp i could at the time split a drumhead in 2 hits, a few times on gigs I was prone to splitting Evans heads because of it. But this was back in the early 90's.
