I've got to say guys, I think I'll be the odd one out in this discussion.
I think Dom is great. Every time I see him, I want to play my drums. This alone is reason enough. He is inspiring to me. I love watching him play, simple as that.
I appreciate some of you guys don't, but I like his drumming. I've seen Dom with a big band, (I think the performance you're thinking of is on the Sabian Larrie Londin Benifit Video) and it's poor given the genre etc. Simple guidance, don't listen to him play with a band!!!
His solo drum performances are inspiring to me, that's just my opinion. I love the guy...

Man, this thread is starting to look like the letters section of Guitar Player magazine. I thought we were all drummers here.....
I personally am embarrassed for any person here who rips on another fellow drummer, especially someone as world reknowned and respected as Dom Famularo. And Dom, if you've never met him, is probably one of the most sincerely positive cats on the planet today, whether we're talking about everyday people or the drumming scene.
You all should take a look at yourselves, your own abilities, and drumming careers before you starting judging.
And as my mother used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it."

Kinkymook,
Well said man, I'm not ragging on anyone here, all a ya'll are great! Having said that, I've noticed latetly that there is too much negativity flying round...

There's no need to slam Dom. Let's appreciate him for who he is, and what he does. He does what he does really well.
It's one thing to be able to play the instrument.
It's another to be able to take this instrument and make music with it. That's the purpose of the instrument, and the technique, IMHO, and where many of us get derailed. If we play the music, the instrument will, in many cases, play itself.

Yeah, man, tons of negative sh*t flyin' around lately... like i said, might do some good to post one's own clips on here, when offering critique of others, so we can return the favor and offer 'constructive' criticism.

I don't believe it's negative to call someone on their lack of ability when they claim to be something they're not.
I said he has a great positive vibe, and I love his energy. But his actual ability on the drums is not relevant to these.
He's a hack on the drums. His solos are..soft cymbal swells, special effects, dbl kick rolls, and bombastic nonesense.
That's not negative. It's what I hear. He's not a musician, he's a public speaker with useless drum chops.
I didn't say he's not a great person. But let's be real. I'm not afraid to speak the truth. This is a drum board. Don't come on here and jump on the negative trip. How about the "call a spade a spade trip". Smoke and mirrors are a pet peeve of mine that don't belong in music and this is a drum forum. I just want people to know, he's not fooling everyone.
I also get angry when people forge and lie on their bios and resume. Dom's never done a recording in his life.

Well said Paraflam, very eloquant.

Man,
I appreciate your opinion, it's great and like I said, I'm not ragging on anyone. It just seems to me there is a lot of negativity going on. If you don't think it's negativity, at least admit it's not positive!
It's just someone like Dom gives a lot to the drumming community. I've just been to a Vic Firth seminar he hosted on making teaching a sucessful business. He captivated the audience. There was not one person who came who wasn't inspired by this drummer. I for one was inspired.
I feel the same about his solo drumming. Someone's personality really matters to me. When I hear them play, that comes through.
Paraflam, I admire the way you are able to "tell it like it is". It's great that you are a hero for the "call a spade a spade" brigade. We need people like you in the world to bring us back down to earth.
My point is, not everyone can be Steve Hass. I like Dom's 'smoke and mirrors' and his showmanship. I don't try to think he's fooling anyone. What would he gain? If you pay to go to his clinics, you've already paid his wage, simlilarly too if you go to have a lesson with him. Let him be guys!!!
Peace...
