I've yet to meet a "real" drummer that didn't have BC as a major influence, or at least acknowledge him w reverance pertaining to his monumental influence on the artform. Any drumr who wouldn't do so is either too young, green, is ill-or-un-informed, or just doesn't know any better [& needs to be "hipped"]

To say he doesn't groove would be foolish AW. He had his own thing going on...& was instrumental [pardon the pun] in influencing countless of the greats to follow.

When i think Most Influential Drummers of All-Time, such as Elvin, Art, Philly, Tony, Buddy, S Payne, Haynes, Gadd, Husb, Ersk, Dennard, Lenny, Garib, Gottlieb, Vince, Weckl, Tain, Baron, Chambers, Novak, Kennedy, etc - I also think of Billy [in the first 5 or so].

Anyone who doesn't realize these things needs to go back to Drumming 101...

Hey, Paul! Yea! HOD is a great forum!

Gary - I am interested (raising hand)!!
And you are a monster too!

What can I say about the guy?! He has
done more for me than just about any other
drummer and not just musically. He was
my first real influence in jazz-fusion.

The guy helped me look at everything from
a different perspective, not to mention
helping me get through an injury, inspir-
ing me to capitalize on the setback and
I did and all, thanks to him!!

I will forever be indebted to Billy Cobham!!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks Pete,

Yes I know and respect the man himself greatly. He did a lot to help me too. In terms of what he did, he was nothing short of a revolutionary. I kinda like to think that's obvious but it's amazing how somehow he seemingly gets left out a little. It's mystifying how anyone could in any way gloss over exactly how ridiculous he was, and exactly what he brought about - the innovator he was.

Well, if you listen to the entire tune, towards the end there is a delightdul part wherer John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham interact in very interesting ways.

What is extremely exciting is the tone of Billy Cobham's drums. His finely-tuned drum-kit is superb. And when superb playing is combined with those great drum tones, it is an unforgettable listening experience. I like the patterns which Billy Cobham plays towards the end of "You Know, You Know". The depth of tone he manages to get from his toms strikes me. It really stands out. He play very loudly but also has a very delicate touch - which I admire. He's been an inspiration for years.

Cheers,

there is a vid of BC with gil evans orch. same show as the billy/bellson thing but not on that video (if my mem serves me). BC is clearly reading big band charts, playing his tail off too. its enjoyable to see guys read and play. especially at that level- WOW.

his version of some skunk funk is still the quintessential version for me.

Those of us who have not heard the first Dreams album would do well to check it out. That was was my introduction to BC. I sought it following some comments on him in Downbeat.

Very tasteful, with some great playing as well. Kind of like the way he's been playing lately.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think that's on there...and yes, it's totally frightening to see him sight read and play what he played at that tempo.

That's another thing that kills me about BC, he is the Ultimate Drummer, like the Zen Master of drumming, he knows how to do it all and knows why he does it.

IF we don't strive for that ideal, what the hell are we bothering for?
