<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hey Randy, I live in Chicago and I have a five peice Gretch USA maple kit, where could I go to get my bearing edges done? Also what is that place you spoke of called Drum Paradise?Bill Detamore does Vinnie's edges or at least has done them in the past and is considered to be the better cat for cutting Gretsch drums over say the Drum Nurse or some of the others out there.

They do some really nice work! I also saw Vinnie's yellow kit being worked on out there.
what does having your bearing edges worked do? does it really improve your sound? i have a yamaha maple custom and they sound great but does this make them even better or give you a desired sound? also has anyone had this done before? and did it help?
Having your edges done does indeed help achieve a better drum sound. Not all companies have a perfect edge out of the box and there are different types of edges that can be done, 45 in, 45 out and in, rounded. Depends on the sound you want to get, it's best to talk with a cat that does this type of work and they can help you make a choice. Like I said, Bill detamore is a great edge specialist, he has done the majority of my drums.

I did it on my Gretsch and Bill basically saved that kit. I would've sold it for sure because it sucked M A J O R ass. Now, it's by far my favorite.
I always recommend Gretsch owners do it as Gretsch's edges are complete garbage IMO.
However, I've owned a number of Yamaha Maple Customs and really like the sound as is. I really like Yamaha's edge work and if you like the drums, I recommend you NOT have any work done. It's just not worth the expense if you're already happy.
I just recently received my Gretsch Customs, and though I'm not anywhere near as experienced with their sound as Derek, Randy, etc., I CAN tell you that, after working with them for the little amount of time that I've had them, they're really starting to sound wonderful.....and I'm sure it will only get better. I had my edges done at Drum Paradise, and the sound is really starting to define itself. Unfortunately, I can't give you any input as to how the drums sounded before the edge job since I never had them until then.
Derek is right, if you like the drums as they are then don't spend the money. especially on say a Yamaha or Pearl kit. Tama is questionable on their edges.
