Hi guys! It?s been a while since i started to search on ebay for a RC kit for myself. In a couple of month i?ll need it, so i would like to know (if i can?t find it by that time) which kit that?s still on production would sound more like old RCs... Yamaha?s Absolute Birch maybe?
I don?t care to check other brands kit...
Thanks!

If you really want the RC sound, why not buy a used one?

Julian,

I can vouch for the Birch Absolutes. I have a kit myself and they sound tremendous! In my experience, they seem to be more "lively" sounding than RC's and a bit more resonant. I use coated Ambassadors though. I'd imagine that with Pinstripes or Emperors (or whatever Evans, et al. equivalent) you'd come pretty close. I checked and both series use a 6-ply birch shell (7-ply bass drum).

-Tom

[edit: oops, you clearly meant OLD Recording Customs, not new]

For me the RC without the YESS system and with short tom is the real deal !!!
The RC from the 80's so.

Good luck.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">My understanding is that the birch shell of the RC is identical to that of the BCAN. So, the differences would be the yess mounts and the aluminum die cast hoops.

PS: and the Nouveau lugs.

This looks like a good deal on a used RC:

The new RC's sound fantastic; just like the old ones. They're some of the most consistent drums made today.

Get a new one, you won't regret it and you can get the sizes you want.

Hey Julian..

I think Yamaha still makes these drums brand new.

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/...P%253D,00.html

Now I'm not sure if the plys of the older 80's shell is of a different thickness, but the specs on the new drums show both the Birch Absolutes and the Recording customs to be 6ply toms and 7 ply bass drums. Maybe if you call Joe Testa or Jordan his assistant at Yamaha, they might know the differences if any.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I would buy an used one, for sure! but I live in Argentina and here?s hard to find pre-yess RCs in 20, 14, 12 and 10. It?s a matter of time to find one, but i?m buying a new kit soon for some studio working, and if i can?t find a nice RC i would like to have a similar sounding kit...

I?d never heard RCs with YESS system... are that different old and new RCs?
