I agree about the whole chops thing! Amazing sick sick stuff. And I also agree about the lack of music. In a musical way, it didn't really do much for me either.
But I thought it was very entertaining, and I enjoyed it a lot actually... He just seems so happy and into it. I love it. Its the kind of positive energy that should be going to music. His sense of humor with the one handed roll book thing had me cracking up too. (but mostly cracking up at the fact that he was playing one handed so fast! hah!) But either way, I was thinking about his unmusicality and all this negative stuff when I first put it on, but then started to think.... Man how can I say anything bad about this guy when hes got such a grin on his face while playing! hahaha. It may not have hit me musicaly, but it certainly did put a smile on my face.

Horrible, absolutely horrible. Incredible chops in apparently random arrangement combined with high-school mugging. Gah.

I like Mike's positivity as a person and his great interdependence and polyrhythmic skills. His playing on that Extreme record is great, and musical for the genre. "Hip Today" has Mike playing a nice little groove in 7, and as mentioned has that cool intro fill. Anyone else here think the 7 section is based on Innagaddadavida?

the single hand stuff was insane, but as a solo for mass consumption, I didn't get it. He took me out of the "illusion" a bit...

This was really hard for me to watch. First of all, put a freakin' shirt on dude. I don't really want to see your armpit hair and spare tire (I've got one too but I cover it up!) as you're playing. It's distracting from the aping facial expressions he uses to demonstrate how hard what he is playing is to pull off.
As for the drumming, clearly he's got interdependence talent. I'll bet he can walk and chew gum real good too I just think that even within the context of a solo, even if it is at a exhibition/clinic, should have some musical context. This to me just didn't have any. so, that combined with all the cheesy showmanship (wipe the brow with a book in your hand on the single hand roll etc. etc.) was basically just annoying IMHO

Alright Peter and AVI. You guys are making me feel guilty. I'll look again and try to look past all the nasty stuff. I'm really not one of the guys who just like to bash people in here. This was just a tough one.

SS,
No! LOL! You all make good points.
I was just reminding everyone that
there was something to be gotten
from what he does.
Discipline is good thing.

I, for one, am going to take
the positive out of Mike's of-
ferings. There is positive
there for those, who will
look for it.
