What I think is funny is that a lot of people seem to think that once a drummer participates in something like WFD, he is a one-trick horse.
As if all of there talent is null and void....Ever think that alot of these guys are saying to themselves "Hey I'll give it a bash for the hell of it! It's just a bit of fun" as opposed "I HAVE to be the be THE WORLD'S FASTEST DRUMMMMMERRRR!!!! SPEED IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER!!!!!"...
Listen to "Channel One Suite" at 11:19, and if someone walked past at the very moment not knowing who Buddy was they'd think "God....So unmusical....I'm off home to listen to "City Nights".
WFD isn't something that I'd take part in myself, but it seems like some players are black listed once they have taken part.
I presonally think it's just a bunch of drummers having a bit of a laugh.

"Mike Mangini became the first man to hit 1200 single strokes in 60 seconds"
First time I read this topic. Very interesting...
...with all my respect to all the serious and deep answers it has originated.

Are you seriously trying to say that Thomas Lang isn't known in the world of music??? Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these "Lang is the best. Period" types, but he must be one of the most in demand drummers in the world...
I heard Lang's name long before I heard Pelton's.

Those who have been on this board for a while know my views on this subject, so I won't induldge in an extended diatribe on this one!
I'll just say this: Playing single strokes on a practice pad to a stopwatch - which the WFD essentially is, let's not make any bones about this has absolutely nothing to do with drumming. It has everything to do with the ability to play fast single strokes on a practice pad to a stopwatch and that's it!
So why not call it The World Record For Playing The Fastest Singles On A Practice Pad and end it there. To proclaim oneself as The Worlds Fastest drummer is simply bullshit.
Drumming is about having great ears, empathy, touch, feel, your own sound/personality, groove, time, technique, an understanding of form and musicality.
Name me one, yes just ONE example of a gig that any of you have done, where the MD says "can we start by seeing how fast you can play single strokes? Hold on while I get my stopwatch!!" It'll never happen. Fact!
Here endeth the lesson!!
