I suggest you wear whatever is most comfortable for you. I can play barefoot, with socks, with shoes, or with boots -- I can be as loud, soft, or fast as I'd like to be in any of those situations. So, I generally play in whatever I'm wearing at the moment.
When playing out, I would suggest wearing shoes. I've stubbed my toes before when playing in only socks or no footwear at all. If socks/barefoot is what you are really into, though, try using some wrestling shoes. They have the intimate feel of wearing nothing/next to nothing, yet they do provide some protection and grip-aid.

I wear "scuba shoes", very lightweight, fast action, tight grip/handle on the pedal board...

I like aqua socks type shoes since they have a good grip, flexible sole, and a reasonable price (approximately $10 per pair).
I use ballet shoes on jazz gigs. Wellington Boots on rock gigs. Roller blades on big band gigs and flip-flops on ballads....... Jeezuz H christ.

I wear wrestling shoes. I like how thin the soles are which in return allows me to have great feel with the pedals..
It?s all subjective but I agree that some sort of shoe should be worn to protect your feet.
Zola Budd was a champion 3000m runner and ran in bare feet. What does that tell us?
She couldnt get a shoe sponsor for her smelly feet?
dazz, she grew up running with no shoes, thats how SHE felt comfortable, and thats what others are posting about.....whats comfortable.
BTW...those sambas are only good for latin songs geoff.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">heh...yeah, but then when i tried to play country, my feet went on autopilot (ok: they were possesed) -- all the tunes came out like samba grooves with my feet going "ba-bomp, ba-bomp" like crazy & i got fired within 2 songs. BARE FOOT, I have been playing that way since i was five .I have very fast feet from what i have been told and i have used sneakers and dance shoes and i think after a while the shoes brake down so now you have a different feel and different balance .Like your sticks when you hit and the wood goes flying and brakes down the stick you can feel that! so you grab another stick your kind of teaching your hands to balance a certain weight, now i would think that would be the same with your foot.I can feel my balance point real nice bare foot.Take your shoes off and drive stick in a car you can feel the gear lock in a lot better then if you had shoes on,and again a shoe brakes down a foot will build up
