i think we heard what Johnny Rabb does already in the 30ties and 40ties from drummers like:
Baby Dodds, Cozy Cole, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Louis Bellson, Don Lamond, Sam Woodyard, Jimmy Johnson, Butch Miles

rolling solo:

The only differences, back then when it was invented, it was fun and contemporary, and yes the drummers where dressed (no pyjama people)

all videos are from here:

Anyone in here mastered this thing yet, a la Mangini?

I'm going to keep at it til i 'get the feel' for it...

Now, to me, it would be a great technq to have NOT for just doing it & holdg up the other hand & twirlg the other stick in it, as if to say, "hey, lookit me, i can do this great 1-H'd roll while twirlg," [as would an 80s hair-band drummer IF they had the technq! ]...

...but more for playing a roll w the 1 hand while doing some musical accomp w the other on other parts of the kit...

There is a indie-rock band that is kinda making it big out here in Seattle called 'Death Cab for Cutie'. The drummer for that band (featured in the MD a few months back with Grohl on the cover) is Jason McGerr. He has that one handed thing totally down! Both hands, AND the feet. On the feet it is actually cleaner than JoJo cause he doesn't bury into the head. Listening to his band's music, would have no idea he could do this... the guy has mad chops, studied with Jim Kilpatrick, i believe.

I don't believe he does it on any of their songs on the CD, but i can double check. I only know he can do it because i've seen him do it while we were messing around on a practice pad.
