Remo had a cool display at NAMM. They had a very long row of 10" Acousticon drums set up with just about every style of their heads. Each drum was tuned pretty much to the same pitch. You could hear the head characteristics as you played each drum. My favorites in that display were the clear ambassadors and the clear powerstroke which brought out a whole lot of bottom an top end from that small 10" drum.
It's all a question of taste is what it all comes down to i think. I mostly use either Clear G2's or Clear Emperors on my kits, but i also mostly do Rock or Funk gigs. Another nice aternative to 1 or 2 ply heads are the P3'S, which are 1 ply heads with an extra ply underneath wihich is about a 1 inch diameter ring around the edge. [img]smile.gif[/img]

great post btw. i recently changed my configuraton to 9x12 rack 14x16 flr, 6.5 x14 sn and 22x18 kick. i've played the kit in live setting yesterday w/ coated emperors on the toms. the other heads lke the powerstroke for the kick and emperor x for snare turned out great. i felt the toms were still a little to boingy? felt to thin. bounced too much for the size of drums and the tone was still a little too thin. are there any heads that are in between emperor coated and pinstripe coated?

I use g2 and emad (all coated) on my starclassic maple and they are really cool. My plasticthing which hold the muffle ring never crack.

I use emperors for the most part, but chop and change kit/heads as to what the gig requires.
I've recently been using the Emperor Smooths and had some great results. they have plenty of attack because if the white colouring (don't ask me how the colour affects the sound but it honestly does - try it yourself) but because they are a double ply head they are relatively warm and durable...
