Alas, too many people (myself included) consider
themsleves too 'preoccupied' to live an environ-
mentally conscious life. Personally, I never use
any kinds of bags, except the tatty big sports
thing that normally houses my university stuff.
When I go for a big shop, I shove it all in the
tatty bag ... strap it over my back and cycle it home.
My tires/spine/lightweight Scott frame and pedal
crank hates it, but so be it. I've no need for
plastic bags so I don't ask for them.

If I possessed one of those (cute?) Big Brown
Bags, I'd probably stick it on my wall. (If
JJ was reading this, I'd have one in the post
in a few days, bless her dear heart. Does any-
one know her myspace address? - I've lost it.)

I'm currently reading George Carlin's latest book, and he had this to say about paper vs plastic:

"When the supermarket checkout person asks, "paper or plastic?" I often say, "woven silk," just to keep him on his toes. "Rolled steel" is not a bad answer either."

No supermarket checkout person asks 'Paper or
    Plastic' nowadays.

around here they always ask paper or plastic and they have both paper and plastic out and available for people who bag their own stuff.

they also have a deal around here that if you bring in your own bags, instead of using new ones, they give you a discount on your purchase. the stores sell fabric bags (shaped like the classic paper bag) with handles that a lot of people use. this is only at the grocery stores though, not the targets, wal-marts and the kmarts.

another thing at the grocery stores around here is that they all have recycle bins at every entrance for the plastic bags

as for my preference, i prefer blondes, about 5?10 say about ?.. oops wrong thread.

but seriously, i?m with mandi here on this one, not literally but anyway, i usually hit the grocery store only when i need something. we are not big on going once a week and buying everything, so i can usually get away with just grabbing my stuff, after paying of course, and walking out without a bag. if we do buy a lot i always take paper so i can cut eye holes in them and run around the neighborhood scaring the kids.

As far as I'm aware, there is absolutely no one
in the UK providing recyling options, or offering
discounts for people providing their own bags.
    How sad.

I'm sure someone in the UK offers discount if you re-use plastic bags, but I can't remember where I was when I experienced this. It could've been Somerfield a few years back.

You should give the 'bag for life' a try, Daz. I'm sure Tesco will replace a split one.
