I remember sitting in a hotel room and saying... well you remember what I said.
Now you have to record it. I've only been begging for 2 years.

The old Punk band Gang Green did a cover of "Voices Carry" that was AMAZING! I don't know, after hearing their version, I would be a little hesitant on doing a cover of it. Just like "99 Red Balloons", it would make a great cover, but 7 Seconds did it, and they did it to perfection.

In my Ex-Boyfriends era we did Common People by pulp but in the style of Pretty Vacant - re-christened "Pretty Common". I thought that was quite inspired. We also did The Theme from Minder in my next band. I am hoping to do Lee Majors The Unknown Stuntman (theme from the Fall Guy) next. I think a cover should be a bit different but a sincere tribute to a song you like. Not a piss take. A rubbish song won't work well in any style.

No pisstakes, sure, but that would eliminate all those covers that punk seemed to specialise in. I liked Jam's "Midnight Hour," but that sounded no more "punk" than the Bite Back album by Slaughter (and The Dogs).
Great Big Kiss by NYDolls was a great cover, but they were obviously influenced by R&B/Soul/Latin, so it wasn't unexpected.
I wouldn't mind a cover bringing out another side to a song. Someone here posted once that they covered Straight Up by Paula Abdul. I've not heard it, but I could see latent worth in the original.

The jam did Midnight Hour cos Weller is a massive soul fan. Equally the White Stripes did Jolene because of jack White's love of country music. I think the reason why bands cover Britney Spears Hit Me One More Time is because when you take away the glossy production, it's a good song. I thought the Dolls did some great covers & Great Big Kiss is typical of Thunders' love of the girl bands of the 60s.
