When we first started rehearsing The Odd Couple at Wheaton Drama, I spoke to someone who wondered how Wheaton would handle the idea of a black actor playing the role of Oscar.

I thought it was a non-issue. This is 2008, not 1968.

We did our final dress as a preview for a group of seniors. They were having fun watching the show and listening to the exposition, then Ed McDow (Oscar) came in.

There was sharp gasp from one woman, who then said rather loudly, "Oh my! He's black!" Ed said later that he almost laughed out loud when he heard that.

Anybody have any other stories of controversial or inappropriate audience reactions?
