his tail
spiked with horns and teeth
to fend off your demons
attack them
when they threaten
to take you over

i know that your dragon
with his bloodred eyes
will keep you safe

but i see his sadness in his eyes
i see that he wishes
he did not have to be here
on your hand and arm
he wishes that you
did not need him
to keep you safe

i share his wish
but he and i both know
how important he is to you
that he must stay with you
and keep you safe
