inachis io

[crazy a]

the moon-faced waitress
smiles as she brings
my fried mushrooms.

they're like nuggets
of hot brown gold,
dipped in ranch dressing
then consumed.

a lettuce leaf remains,
then that's gone
too.

I look over my left shoulder.

the inachis io watches
me with its tiger eyes,
wishing, perhaps, to dip
me
in ranch dressing
and consuming me
before resting on a
dogwood branch
to lounge among the
white blossoms
before they litter
the sidewalk.

I guess I should explain that the inachis io is a butterfly. The picture I've seen shows two sets of "eyes" on it's wings. The eyes on the top are blue and the eyes on the bottom look like those of one of the big cats. (I say tiger, maybe lion.)
