Outside the guard dog barks something absurd at the darkness, at the people in the darkness, at the darkness in the people
And down the hill across the way we watch the lights fall, dual beams and solos, trails of bumpers edging against
each other, so close to home

We can't turn down the music, or even shut the window blinds
We haven't permission to look out silently, but we do
and peering down to the lake we see

Everyone has forgotten the water, laps, our breakfast for dinner,
our sweet avoidance of all the things we'll never say

All the things we'll never say, we'll put in the trash
over and over again
until one day the trash is against us
and the mice scury
and then we have to move

With possible neighbors looking aslant
It isn't something we can do

When the lights fall down the hill
and the dog knows we're afraid
and the trash is piled up so high against the wall
and everyone can see in the dark,
Then we'll once again ask ourselves

Have we cleaned our shoes?
Have we put on the nice suit?
Is this the face we want to be making in the mirror
when the mirror is just us
when the mirror is just us

the mirror is just us

All of my fear comes beating after me
and then the cliche falls, and the music stops, and I'm only here
talking to myself in the evening
wishing the must was the do

and you were really whoever I am

Here we go back again
round right the noise and down
