Since things may go One Year War, I feel the need to give this brief history of the events up to where our story will begin.

Universal Century 0001, after the overpopulation of the Earth seemed too much to bear, at 9 billion people, a solution was found. The ruling Earth Federation began its ambitious plan for the colonization of space using artificial colonies. The plan is swiftly put into action and seems to be a success. The first generations are born there in due time and the first six decades are for the most part peaceful. But as the new calender entered its sixth decade the calls for revolution began. The Earth Federation government wanted full control of the Colonies, but, because they controled them from earth, could not comprehend all the issues and hardships faced by these colonist. These revolutionaries, like many before them, would begin there plans in a place far from the reach of their "owners".
In the cluster of colonies called Side 3, located on the dark side of the moon, a man named Zeon Daikun took up the call for Spacenoid autonomy. Preaching of a brave new world, he claimed a New Type of human would be born from the "mind expanding" experience of living in space. People rallied behind Zeon, at the same time the colonies began building a their own space battle fleet.
Zeon Daikun tried to reason with the Federation on multiple, but they refused to recognize Side 3 as an independant nation. Still, people stood behind his cause, including the Degin Zabi, a wealthy man who seemed to have his own plans. Degin was very close to Daikun. It was around the time when Degin was closest, shortly after another failed summit in 0068, that Daikun died. The cause was unknown, but Degin was suspected, especially after he took control of the new Government and gave command to his own children. Daikun's children disappeared shortly afterward as the Side 3 colonies became violent. They proclaimed that they were a nation, The Principality of Zeon. Degin's son Gihren became commander in chief, and began leading his people to war, preaching of a master race all along the way.

Mobile Suits
The Fedetation was not amused. Zeon had begun rolling out battle ships and declaring space around their colonies as "Zeon Air Space". It was decided that if Zeon wanted a War, that's what they'd get. This would be the first space war though, and there were many problems. Thanks to the new Minovski reactors which powered most ships and left residual particles, radar and guided weapons where useless. The Federarion was expection to pull through with Fighter plane. The War Began in January of 0079. As the Fedartion entered its first real battle with Zeon, they were overwhelmed by what Zeon unleashed. The Zaku, a humanoid weapon faster and more manueverable than a fighter with the firepower to take out a battle ship. The Federation pulled back. This battle, in the air space of the Loum colony, would lead Zeon to their first brutal strike at Earth. After filling the colony with poison gas, they sent it down to Earth. The Fedeartion tried desperately to stop it, but the Mobile suits defended the colony and decimated the Federation fleet. The colony was supposed to hit Federation HQ, instead it went off course and destroyed Sydney, Australia. This was all made possible by Zeon mobile suits.

The War Continues...
As both sides lost half of their respective populations, a treaty was signed that no chemical of nuclear weapons would be used in the war. (There was much political intrigue involved with this decision.) It became more important that the Fedartion catch up to Zeon's mobile suits. As the wars dragged on for months hope for the federation came in the form of the Gundam, a prototype mobile suit which could outmatch the Zeon's models in all forms of performance, partly thanks to its new beam weapons. This machine would serve as the model for Federation suits to follow. But due to the its unusual and expensive construction, nigh-impossible to replicate with a limited war budget. Still the federation rolled out suits and as the new pilots would receive their prototypes they would have one more thing to rally around.

Current Events
The Gundam and its home ship, White Base, recently survived a battle with Degin Zabi's youngest son, Garma. Garma was killed in action. The performance of the ship has been a great morale booster to the relatively few pilots of the Federation's brand new mobile suits. Yet, the future is still unsure.
At the same time Garma's death has been a rallying for Zeon. Gihren has made no limit to the ceremonies in honor of his good looking and charismatic younger brother. The war has become more personal.

(And that's where the OYW game would start from.)
