data missing, it would be similar to the original
hb switch -- unanticipated data missing or something
like that. everything is being tested thoroughly
prior to the release so the switch should go
flawlessly. however, in almost all cases like
this, anything can happen.

i assume hostboard will be quite similar to how
it is now in as far as new traffic is concerned.
we already receive tons of new visitors/registrants
daily.... so i expect there won't be a huge new
surge.

what gt said... basically, it costs quite a bit
to keep what we already have... much less what
we will soon be getting. in fact, when i saw
the new version... i even asked steven,
"all of this for free???"

naturally the ads help buffer the cost... but
as i've said many times in the past, if our
registrants already donated (even a small
donation) it could help. from what i understand,
there will be some pay features... in addition
to already existing features that will be
improved with a donation. nothing short of what
any other service would provide.

as for the present ads... i don't think they
are very offensive, especially when you consider
there are no pop-ups or sneaky ads.

i know this prollo doesn't apply to many people
reading this board, but a few of you know how
i feel about the sudden and current arrangement
of new ads on the neopets site. the new ads
completely hinder in viewing the site (for many
reasons which i won't go into)... not to mention
the ads themselves are unbelievably huge and
obnoxious.

i believe hostboard3 will handle ads in a different
way... at least, when i viewed hb3... there was
talk of having ads displayed differently.
if the new format stays as planned, its possible
that many will find it ridiculous and different...
so different that they may dislike the change.

however, as i said before... if every registered
member donated $1 a month... every month...
it would prevent the need for ads completely.
since we do not have that (and do not force it)
we have no choice but to comply with ads on
the site.

but on another note... taking it from the
advertisers perspective, hostboard houses many
prospective buyers... so even if we were ad-free,
many people (advertisers) would want to tap
in on the flow of people... which would mean
that if they paid a price, they could have an
ad.

i personally think that considering the monetary
situation put on steven with hostboard, and the
overall lack of generous funding via the registrants,
ads are the way to go... and since steven has
made the ads less intrusive and viewer friendly,
i think its completely fine.
