ok ok.... you've made me budge on telling more...

the story goes like this...

the lady i lived with raised ducks. she wanted
to eventually open her own mailorder gourmet kinda
thing. it was gonna be called 'darla's fresh meats and quackers'
(she thunk that up 'erself!)

she was going to smoke all kinda game and purchase
bulk crackers and put it all together for the
mailorder catalog (that was before anyone had
the internet... and knowing them folk in GA,
they still don't have it).

it was agreed that when the goats got big enough,
they'd be slaughtered and smoked and put up for
'business'....

i left GA before i knew what happened to them.
i had kept the goats for about 6 months to a year....

i'm sure they were tasty.

He ate lamb chops for dinner that evening, eh?

edit: can't look at a jar of applesauce or mint-jelly again without bursting into tears?

"sells it"...?

you had Nanny, Billy & Shoeshine. You wouldn't have to have bought anything.

don't worry....

the 4 original 'tester' ducks she owned were also supposed
to be slaughtered...
(tester meaning -- testing to see if they'd mate)
but...

*another shatzy story*

as i was driving down the road one day, i saw a
duck on the side of the road. a big white mo fo!
it took me a bit but i captured it and took it
back home.
we kept 'big red' (as i called him) in a larger
pen beneath the upper deck (yes, i made that damn
pen too!). a few days later, we purchased 5 more
ducks...

big red mated with all the females.
we had eggs out the ass.

i collected eggs every week, it seemed like.
we had so many damn eggs...

darla created a make-shift incubator as sort of
a 'project'... outta a few panels and a heating
bulb. we attempted to incubate 3 eggs.

mine was the only one that hatched (a few days
before easter too!).

with that... she wheeled out the HUGE ten tray
incubator in the barn... fixed it, hooked it up,
and i started putting all the eggs i gathered
in the large incubator.
3 times a damn day i went out there and turned
every single fucking egg... and checked water
levels and shit...

21 days or so later, we had a shitload of baby
ducks....
and more eggs were being incubated... and more
eggs were being created.

it was almost a nightmare!

just before i left GA... i was building a friggin
yardsized pen for all the ducks... it had a
natural stream running through the pen... and
part of the stream was to flow into an old bathtub
we put in the ground (to make a pool for the babies).

i never got to finish the project... but i loved
doing it (what i had so far).

moral of the story:

the same 4 ducks were too precious as pets to
even be placed into the same pen with big red
and the others.

i highly doubt my little shoeshine made it to the table.
