i've only received the police pamphlet twice in
my life. the pamphlet that reveals the persons
identity, known address, phone number, crime info.
picture... known relatives...

everything about the criminal is on this pamphlet.

the first one i received was when i worked at
the oh-so-posh florist... in which my bosses
made copies of the pamphlet -- posted it on the
doors of the building, and left a stack of them
by the cash register for all the customers.

the second came when i moved here, to conway...
a month or two later, it was taped to my door.

although i do not remember the offence of the
first criminal, i do remember that the one posted
here was from a child molester/murderer... who,
based on the pamphlet, lived a few blocks down
from me.

although i suppose the community may have a right
to know... it also has the MAJOR potential to
establish hate crimes toward the ex-con.

of course, this type of 'social service' always
makes me remember the middle ages... when criminals
basically served their time/received punishment
for their crimes... and then served up to the
community for a life of banishment.

this is cruel.

The real answer, and something that is NEVER DONE...

anytime any government agency or some investigative agency creates a "file" on someone, that person should have a right to respond on the very piece of paper that has the "investigations" results.

I would apply this rule to all Americans, ANY report that gets circulated about you, you should have the right to "attach" a response so that gets circulated
along with the report.

no one is stopping the ex-con from circulating
a 'response'.... did you forget that, alex?

or are you suggesting that in addition to the
pamphlet generated by a government agency...
there should be a secondary pamphlet circulated
by the same or another government agency???

these police pamphlets are truly quite horrible. It's like the police giving the community residents an open invitation for a lynch mob. what incentive does a person have in trying to reform from their past when everyone knows what they did, where they come from and most likely ostracise them from this community?

well shit. if you get pamphlets on convicted paedophiles and whatnot, why don't you get pamphlets on people convicted of grand theft auto, so you know to lock up your cars when they're around.

i don't really believe that the community has the RIGHT to know anything of its residents. that is being far too presumptuous. If there is an inherent RIGHT to know about residents, then everyone should reveal themselves to be put under public scrutiny by the community such as who's having an affair with who, who's got drinking problems, who engages in S&M, whatever. many people confuse RIGHTS with PRIVY or PRIVALEGE

It is not going to happen anytime soon.

isn't that just as demeaning?

I wonder what the difference is between someone who just commited a crime, is in prison for it, and one that did his time, and lives somewhere now.
