is there a such thing as 'evil'?
i'm not referring to a dictionary term or a slight understanding of what the word means.
i know what it means.
what i wanna know is, i cannot say because i have to use a word that i have grown to loathe... 'exist'.
so, technically, does evil, in fact, 'exist'?

lord, please don't post:

1) evil exists because there is too much non-necessary, prolonged pain in the world...blah blah blah.

2) evil exists because we can conceive of the word, context and meaning of...blah blah blah.

as a matter of fact, don't even start your post out that way.
i would substitute 'exist' for the word 'real' (as in-- is evil 'real'?) but i am afraid i have just created a similar problem.
i think we are all old enough here to understand what i am asking.

for the sake of argument, i do not believe evil exists/is real.

I am going to go WAY out on a limb and guess that a biblical answer was NOT the answer wanted on this board.

So, in looking at questions such as this, you really need to apply the answer to everyone, or at least the majority of the world population.

Evil?
First we must example is morals exsist. And what are morals but knowing right from wrong.

I belive that all people are born with an understanding of right or wrong (this can of course be argued but this is what I think and sence I am talking, LIVE WITH IT!)

So if right is Good then Wrong is Evil.

Therefor I think Evil exsists in some form for everyone.
One person may take evil to mean the devil, another to represent something in nature, or others can view evil as something simple like hitting your spouse.

I hate to do this but as ALWAYS, it depends on what someone defines as evil.

If you agree with me that Wrong=evil then we are living in a world with a WHOLE BUNCH of evil. If you think evil is something witches or satan worshipers do, then there is less but clearly there is some. If you do not belive in right and wrong and are lead by the idea that you can do what you want, then there is no true evil.
AND you are also VERY likely to be viewing this from a jail sell.

er...to be honest, i am not fully sure biblical renderings of 'evil' are NOT pertinent to this discussion, however, i do not see them valueable at this time.

what i want to know, in response to shaz (and maybe mr. robin), if you feel that way about evil--what is the difference between EVIL and BAD?

an apple can be BAD, yet certainly it cannot be EVIL.
in addition, a person can know that an apple is BAD without moral implications.
how does your view 'wrong=evil' stand up?

WRONG...EVIL...BAD

In the beginning, there was nothing wrong, nor correct, neither good or bad. Then I came up.
One day, I felt hungry and picked an apple. I ate it and hunger went away.
A couple of hours later, I felt hungry again and picked a flower. I ate it and soon felt weird.
I then realised that 'apple + eating' is OK, while 'flower + eating' is NOT OK.

Some other combinations that I found OK:
'cold + blanket'
'thirst + water'
'darkness + candle'

Some combinations that I found NOT OK:
'marbles + washing machine'
'sugar + teeth'
'stone + head'

Here are some combinations that I found neither OK nor NOT OK:
'rain + fish'
'apple + wheel'
'glass + money'

Here are some combinations that I only found OK <u>occasionally</u>:
'I + people'
'razor + skin'
'fireplace + sleep'

Still ain't got it?

Evil needs a frame of reference to be understood, since that doesn't exist (only in a book, which can't possibly count), nor does evil; only good and bad and all that in between, which does have a frame of references (our consciences). Thus evil doesn't exist.

beta-- hmmmm.... i originally wanted to say, 'i agree the most'...but something went awry. he he he. i agre that evil (if it exists) must come from intent...moreso malice. but malice is a strickly human condition, a property. therefore, is it safe to assume that evil can exist but only if it pertains to humans? are humans somewhat responsible?

this is where i link it back to god...
but it is not time yet.

evil isn't an action, it is an adjective describing anything--be it an action or a thing.
if i were to tell you that i was leaving this afternoon to 'go do evil'...you could not clearly understand what exactly the action is i will be doing, only the possible properties thereof.
therefore, i ask you:

is murdering bad...or evil?

This topic was supposed to be a philosophical one. What went wrong?
By saying truly exists, philosophically, per se, frame of reference, need of definition, in itself etc., you all just misuse a philosophical jargon, yet mean nothing at all.
You don't know where evil is to be found. Such a debate just makes bad things even worse.
