so i'm reading my monthly newspaper...fumbling along as i choke down the crap and arrogance of mortal men. then i read something interesting...
Some people in Nampa, Idaho circulated a petition requesting that (public) library material, considered offensive to children under the age of 18 because of sexual material, be removed from the Nampa Library.
"whaaaaat????" i thought. i managed to read on.
apparently, this ta-do-da started by the local library critic for the Nampa newspaper (allen marsh). in an editorial response to this, a mr. gary bennett sent in his agreement with the decision. bennett decided to refrain from writing book titles (which he did at the end of his letter) but managed to give an over-view of certain books he has seen his daughter reading.
the following post will offer some of these summaries.

taken from mr. bennett's letter...

A man rapes a woman causing the woman's brothers to kill every man in the rapist's city. In addition, the brothers take the women and children captive and loot the houses. Is this any way to teach children the concept of justice?

A daughter-in-law disguises herself and seduces her father-in-law who thinks she is just a common prostitute. She becomes pregnant and her father-in-law seeks to kill her. Instead, his whole family finds out about it. Is this any way to teach children about marriage?

A man gets drunk and has sex with his daughters, getting both of them pregnant. With all the reports of incest, should the library stock such books?

Upon looking at a young girl, an older king gets and erection. Should young children be exposed to such things?

This one has a son having sex with his father's prostitute in full view of everyone! This makes today's television seem tame. Should children be taught that this is acceptable behavior?

A great leader sends a man to his death so that he may have the man's wife IN ADDITION to loving another man!! When in a good mood, the leader exposes himself to his people and imprisions anyone whom objects. Should the tender minds of youngsters be exposed to such filth?[/list]
now i ask you all....
what do you think?

the point of the editorial was, in fact, to show the stories of the bible (bible addies can be posted).
the group in charge of the petition was religious based and declared such 'trash' to be removed from the library.
mr. bennet submitted his opinion in order to show the contradiction.
as an additional slap in the face, the newspaper declined the printing of his letter saying:

quote:
Dear Mr. Bennett,
I regret to inform you that after reviewing your guest opinion, Managing Editor Vickie Holbrook has determined that it is too graphic for our readers. Therefore, we won't be able to publish it in its current form. Thanks for your contributions to our Opinion Page, and I hope to hear from you in the future.
