New Smyrna Beach -- A 7-year-old boy was attacked by a shark in New Smyrna Beach on Sunday, making him the first shark-bite victim in Volusia County this year -- and possibly the county's youngest -- a Beach Patrol official said.
Jack Lomedico did not have life-threatening injuries.
He was bitten on the back of his calf while playing in the shallow waters at the Crawford Beach approach, said spokesman Scott Petersohn of the Volusia County Beach Patrol.
The boy got out of the water after the attack, and his parents found puncture wounds in a half-moon shape on the back of his leg, Petersohn said.
EVAC ambulance transported him to Bert Fish Medical Center.
Petersohn said he doesn't recall ever having a 7-year-old attacked in Volusia County.
Volusia is the shark-attack capital of the world, a study released this year by the University of Florida found.
Volusia has more attacks than any county in Florida, and Florida has more attacks than anywhere on Earth, the study found.
On Saturday, a 9-year-old boy and 30-year-old man were bitten in separate shark attacks in St. Lucie County. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
April is the month in which shark attacks start to pick up, Petersohn said. He said Sunday's bite happened really as a "luck of the draw."
"It was kind of a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time." Petersohn said.

As I understand it, many of the shark attacks in that area are carried out by blacktip sharks chasing baitfish. There is the occasional bull shark there though, which is far more likely to carry out a serious or a fatal attack on a person than the blacktips. In either case, it may be a good time to exercise caution in those areas.
