    Hi everyone,
I am new to this message board, but I'm desperately searching for answers. I found out today that I am at risk for placenta accreta. ( spelling?) I have an anterior placenta and this was found out at 20 weeks. I am 28 weeks now and have never heard of this before today. I'm 28 years old and this is my fifth child, fourth c-section. I have heard a lot of horror stories about this and even that there may be a possibility of me not living through the delivery of my child. I'm scared to death and I just was wondering if anyone knows how much of a risk there is for me to have placenta accreta and what the chances that if I do that I will survive it. I don't know if I should be seeing a specialist or getting an MRI or what. I'm very confused about what to do and my doctor really doesn't sense the urgency of the situation. It breaks my heart that there's a chance that I won't even be able to meet my baby or be there for my kids. I just need answers now. Thank you for any information in advance.

I delivered my first daughter October 2006. She was 4 weeks premature. Delivery went normal until it was time to deliver the placenta. It wouldn't come out! Doctor went in up to his elbow and scooped me out like a pumpkin with some reasonable pain. Not another word was said to me about it. June 2007 found out I was pregnant again (on the pill). Babies would be 15 months apart. No one through the whole pregnancy said I was at rick of this happening again. January 2008 I delivered my second daughter with some minimal problems, but the placenta was stuck again. Doctor tried the manual removal and this time I was screaming for him to quit. I was in and out. I was given a shot for the pain and drifted off again. I woke to my husband saying I was headed to the OR. I was hemorraging and needed emergency surgery. I required two blood transfusions and a D&C to try to remove the tissue. I woke up hours later and thought I had been hit by a truck!

This is the sad part. I was seen that day by not one but 4 doctors who didn't say ONE WORD about what had happened to me. Until I looked it up, I didn't even know it had a name. I also found out that the most common treatment is a hysterectomy! I am so disappointed in my health care providers for not advising me of what happened.

I did eventually have a good maternity leave and things were getting back to normal. At 6 wks postpartum I got the Mirena IUD and had 3 normal periods. It is now May and I have been bleeding for 3 weeks now. I got the explanation that it may be my body adjusting to the IUD/hormones. I am not happy with that and have made an appointment to be seen and have ALL my questions answered. I want this cleared up once and for all...mostly for my own sanity.

I lived in the french west indies for 17 years so my first child was born there. It was a nightmare but since it was the first time, I couldnt compare it to anything. When we got to the clinic, I told my husband to just go home and we would call him when I thought he should come. I was in a room with other women and the beds were basically cots. I had to pull the mattress off the bed and I stayed on the floor for 9 hours. I couldnt even get up to pee. I wanted to call my husband but I couldnt even get up to do it. One nurse said no, he couldnt come because the room was not private. The other nurse said yes. They did not call my husband until they took me into the delivery room. He wasnt actually helpful as when I was in hysterics he slapped me and I tried to slap him back! (He is not a violent person...at the time he thought that I was getting hysterical and had to come out of it..."I guess") Also, the sage femme told my husband that I had just started the theatrics when he arrived...making it look like I was looking for attention.Of course, her being the "professional", he believed her. After 9 hours of labour and no pain medication (not my choice...there wasnt anybody to give it) she was finally out but they left me laying there for a bit, waiting for the placenta. Then my doctor comes in and has to rip it out in pieces. He is sorry but he says its urgent as everything will close up and then there will be a problem. You could hear me screaming through the whole clinic I am sure. It felt like somebody was stabbing me over and over. He was showing me pieces when he pulled it out to make me feel better. At one point I reached down and grabbed his wrist in my vicelike grip and said stop...WAIT. After they left me laying there for a long time. I didnt know why at all. When the nurses wheeled me back to the room they made some comments in creole that I was acting like I just had a caesarean and thought I was putting on an act. I was moving very slowly. So I sit up and then get off the guerney and as soon as I stand up, there is blood everywhere....then they are saying...okay, lay back down, lay back down.
To make it short, I didnt even get my baby that night because they left me on the i.v. I could hear her screaming all night long in another room. To top it all off, when I complained, my husband made the comment "Women have babies every day..." I can tell you, its a wonder I didnt divorce him that same day. I think I held a grudge against him, the next six months. My second child I made sure to have an epidural planned which made things better. There was no attached placenta and everything was fine.
I have had problems with a prolapsed uterus but this apparently happens anyway with births. I had my kids when I was 34 and 38 years old.
I have also had thyroid problems after the 2nd birth but don't know if this was related or not.
Anyway, for some reason I wanted to complain so sorry for the long story. It was good to know that I wasnt alone in this type of adventure. I have always wondered if they usually give pain medication when ripping out a placenta??
