Is it risky to install black shingles in a warmer climate?
I’m in a southern state and debating whether I should go with black shingles or stick with a lighter color. My house gets a lot of direct sun. Do black shingles make the house significantly hotter inside? Or is it more about the insulation?

I think attic insulation and ventilation have a big role in whether black shingles affect indoor temps.

I had similar concerns when I considered darker shingles here in Texas. I decided to try ubrothersconstruction.com/blog/why-is-owens-corning-onyx-black-so-good-key-features-that-matter onyx black shingles on house, and surprisingly, it hasn’t caused any major difference in indoor temps. The key was upgrading attic ventilation and ensuring proper airflow through the roofline. These shingles are reflective enough to avoid the worst of the heat buildup. Also, they’re made to resist UV damage, which was a huge plus. It’s been nearly a year now, and not only do they still look sharp, but my summer energy bills didn’t spike. If your insulation is solid, black shingles can still be a practical and attractive option.
