When looking at the pictures of the all the people in New Orleans, the only white faces I see are the rescue workers.

Trav - As I've said before, I HATE politicians - ALL politicians! I do not differentiate between Democrat or Republican or even Independent. And as I have also stated before, I do not think there are any honest politicians!!!!!! If they are honest they do not survive in politics (just look at Jimmy Carter).
We disagree on Jimmy Carter. He was/is a very honest person. He does a lot of work, even at his age now, for the poor of our country. And I think he did the best he could, without being dishonest, for our country. He may not have been either the smartest person but, I have no doubt, he did the best he could do for our country.
I do not claim to be either Democratic or Republican. And I vote for the person I feel will do the best job, be he/she Democtratic, Republican or Independent. Now - I think Bush IS NOT doing the best job (& NO - I don't want the job). I think we are over in Iraq, fighting for oil. And to finish a job that should have been finished by Bush's father. Granted, I think Saddam is a despicable person & deserves to die but I still feel we are over there fighting for oil.
And I do think that the fact that the main population of New Orleans is poor & black instead of white, rich & influential has something to do with how long it is taking to get the necessary & vital help needed down there. And I think that we, as a nation, have nothing to be proud of where this situation is concerned.

Two of my kids were police people (one a male & the other a female). They both were fired for different reasons but the TRUE reasons were political in nature. Sue lost her job because she failed a "fitness for duty" test. The "boss" that hired her was very fair to her. In fact, when she developed the fibromyalgia (that eventually caused her to fail the "fitness for duty" test) he assigned her to the grade schools as the D.A.R.E. officer so that she wouldn't be likely to have to "pull her gun" but when he died an officer that hated Sue was made the "boss" & he forced her to take the test. When she couldn't even hold the gun steady he fired her. She is on disability & trying to start her own art business.
Yesterday Sue went to the newspaper, in Xenia, where she had worked for three years prior to becoming a policewoman & talked to the managing editor & they are now working on a city-wide fundraiser (at Sue's suggestion) for the victim's of the hurricane. I think Sue will help bring in a lot of money using her skills in woodburning and photography for it. I am very proud of the kind of person she is & what she is doing for the hurricane victims. I am not proud of all the politicians & politics involved with EVERYTHING concerning the victims.
Matt is working & is involved with a 68 year old, mentally handicapped man. They are both very fine human beings yet they were both fired because they were too honest.
Please forgive me for having absolutely no faith in the government nor politics. Amen!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sluggo....I don't know Sue but based only on what you say here, it doesn't sound like she was fired for "political" reasons. It seems she was let go because she couldn't meet the fitness requirements. Fibromyalgia will do that to you. I know about your son and that was BS. But not Sue. That was legit.

Well, Jumper. I know there was a legitimate reason for her being fired BUT tell me this - why do they continue to keep on a MAN who was caught groping a female UDF store employee & also was caught reading porn in said UDF's "back room"? Those reports - along with some other VERY incriminating report about other MEN are buried. My daughter's lawyer tells her that she could "bury the City of Xenia" if she chose to do so. Unfortunately, Sue couldn't afford (financially) to wait the number of years it would take to "bury the City of Xenia" & had to accept the City's "offer" of a settlement. Believe me - politics were involved.

Did I mention that the male officer caught groping female UDF clerk (while on duty & in uniform) also had seven (that is - count em 1,2,3,4,5,6,& 7) accidents in his cruiser & ALL of them were deemed to be his fault. And yet said male officer was still kept on the force.

"edited" to add this bit of news.

Sluggo, you missed my point.

The response to the Hurricane has nothing to do with the President (it?s not his job) nor has it anything to do with the wealth or skin color of the victims. It has to do with incompetence and ineffectiveness of federal agencies that mostly exist to protect their own Asses.

What is happening in NO is not the President?s fault. Everyone in LA has known for years that a big blow would devastate NO. This is a State and a City issue. If you want to blame politicians then start with the Mayor and the Governor.

And to the point about the French Quarter not being flooded, that?s because it?s the moneymaker for the City so the City puts it?s funds there. This is not a federal responsibility the states should be responsible for themselves. Where do you think FEMA?s funding comes from, you and me. Wouldn?t you rather have you tax money stay is your state? Don?t you think you can get faster response to an emergency if someone who understands the local issues and not someone sitting in an office in Washington is handling it?

This is not about Politicians, but political philosophy.

Hey Trav!!!!! Pray tell, who do you think is "in charge" of agencies & depts. in Washington????
Sure - the state & city governments are to blame too. What I said is that the only time the "poor" or minorities SEEM to be important is when election time rolls around. POLITICIANS, in general, suck - BIG TIME!!!!! JMHO!!!!

This is something that is a logistical nightmare because of so many things.
#1 is the water. In most Hurricanes, the water receads eventually. In New Orleans it has no-where to go.
The problems of some stem from the fact that they need to rescue people who are stranded in places where they can only be helicoptered or boated out. Can't get the water to recead until the levees are repaired, cant repair the leveees because of all the resources needed to save lives. Cant get as much aid to people because of the high water, which takes it back to the levees needing to be repaired to get the water to receed.
Yes, they have dropped the ball in areas and there should be more help there soon, but the fact that the water isnt going anywhere is making it impossible to get any kind of work done on restoring power or fresh water to the people who are still stranded within the city.
This is different from any other situation after a hurricane, and that is just in New Orleans. This is a disaster of epic proportions.
