    *CHARLIE WOODS(from the Lansing State Journal)

    With 6-foot-8 sophomore center Alex Gauna clogging the lane for Eaton Rapids, East Lansing forward Charlie Woods opted for his perimeter game.

    Woods connected on 5 of 7 3-pointers Tuesday, finishing with 19 points to lead East Lansing to a 61-41 victory.

    "What I told the guys at halftime that I was most impressed with about Charlie was he made three great passes," East Lansing coach Doug Fleming said of Woods, who also had four assists and seven rebounds.

    "When your best player is willing to be unselfish and do that, you are going to have a good game."

    After a quiet first quarter, in which the Trojans seized a 13-7 lead, Woods took control.
    He drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key, hit another on his next trip down the floor, then repeated the feat again on East Lansing's following possession.

    Those nine concecutive points were the highlight of a second quarter in which the Trojans outscored the Greyhounds 26-7.
    East Lansing built a 39-14 lead at halftime.

    "I've been trying to work on my inside game a bit more, but I was hot from outside tonight," Woods said, adding that Gauna's inside presence changed his approach. "You go for the mismatch."

    Woods' only basket inside the 3-point arc came in the first quarter - a spectacular two-handed follow-up dunk over Gauna.

    *MICHAEL WALKER(from the Kalamazoo Gazette)

    South Haven (2-2, 2-1 Wolverine) never led in the game but came within two points during the fourth quarter, thanks in large part to a big performance down the stretch from a sophomore of its own. Guard Michael Walker scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the final frame, including an off-balance 3-pointer.

    ``We made a run at them and they answered,'' South Haven coach Sam Cornett said. ``(Walker) is a really good player and we just didn't get him enough shots and enough looks, which is my fault. Getting him some more shots will be one of our goals after tonight.''

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    *TOM CAWOOD(from the Lansing State Journal)
    A key factor in East Lansing's win was senior forward Tommy Cawood's defense on Gauna.
    Gauna entered the game averaging 15 points per game but was held to just two points in the first half against the Trojans.
    "I just wasn't getting open - it was mostly my fault," Gauna said. "They came out hot, and I think we came out a little intimidated."
    Cawood denied Gauna the ball in the post defensively and contributed 12 points on the offensive end.
    "I think Tommy Cawood is a really underrated player," Fleming said. "Every night, he puts up solid numbers, and he always plays defense on the other guys' best big man. He did a great job on defense."
    *Holt @ East Lansing:
    Trojans use their defense to stifle Holt
    E.L. junior Smith has big game at both ends of court
    Sam Hosey Jr.
    For the Lansing State Journal
    EAST LANSING - When East Lansing forward Charlie Woods struggled with his shot Friday against Holt, the Trojans knew what they had to do - crank up the defensive pressure.
    East Lansing used its suffocating defense to hold the Rams to 11 second-half points in a 45-33 win.
    "When Charlie's not shooting well, we're going to struggle a little bit. But we had some guys step up," East Lansing coach Doug Fleming said.
    Holt appeared in control after holding a 22-21 halftime lead. The Rams then forcing East Lansing into five straight turnovers to build a 26-21 advantage after Rashawn Molden's floater in the lane midway through the third quarter.
    But East Lansing junior guard Eric Smith returned the favor and hounded Holt's guards, allowing the Rams only two baskets and two free throws the rest of the game.
    "I think a lot of guys stepped up and played real good defense all night, which is our trademark this season," Smith said.
    Smith finished with 13 points, two rebounds and four steals - including a key steal and breakaway layup with 1:54 remaining to push the score to 39-33. The Trojans put the game away at the line sinking 11 of 12 free throws in the final quarter.
    Holt wasn't surprised by the Trojans' defense.
    "We were worried because we saw DeWitt scored 10 in the first half against them," Holt coach Matt Essell said. "So it's got a lot to do with them. You just have to move the ball better against them.
    "Scoring 50 on them is like scoring 80 on anybody else in our league."
    Woods was 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds for East Lansing (5-1, 2-1 CAAC Blue). Joe Powers' 12 points and six rebounds led Holt (4-1, 2-1).
    But the story of the night was Smith.
    "Eric Smith's been better and better, game by game," Fleming said. "He's more comfortable being here. He's just playing great defense. He really did a great job out front today."
    "Every game, as long as we play good defense, we're going to be in it no matter who we play," Smith said. "So our big thing will be D-up, and every game we'll be competitive."
    CDBAers showdown goes to East Lansing
    Bristol Prof
    for the Camp Darryl message board
    East Lansing defeats Holt 45-33, in a defensive struggle--thus giving Holt (the LANSING STATE JOURNAL's top team in the Lansing area was 4-0 going into the game) its first loss. East Lansing goes into the holiday break at 5-1. Charlie was getting hacked in the lane all night but didn't really get any foul calls until the second half--he hit 8 free throws on the way to 16 points. Eric had his best varsity game--13 points and 6 steals and only one turnover in 28 minutes on the floor. Joe Powers led Holt with 12 and Rashawn Molden had only 4.
    **** Guys, when you're lucky enough to have me attend one of your games, please make sure that after you play, you come up and say "hello" to show that you appreciate my attendance at your game. There are close to 100 players in the program and I can't make it out to see everyone play during the Middle & High School season. So, if I'm there, you're one of a few that I can watch play.
    Regardless if you feel that you had a bad game, or your team lost, come spend a few minutes with me. I'm making the trip to see you, the CDBA player first, and looking at new prospects second. Hey, you might even get a bag of 'Skittles' out of me, as MIKE SMODIC & KYLE STEWART did!
    Thanks to all of you who have shown your appreciation!
    -Darryl
    Walker powers South Haven past Colts
    COMSTOCK -- Mike McKinley had no difficulty pinpointing who inflicted the most damage on his Comstock boys' basketball team Tuesday night in South Haven's 49-48 victory.
    ``(Mike) Walker hurt us,'' McKinley said. ``He had 12 of his 14 points in the second quarter. He hit four field goals and one was a 3 pointer.''
    Walker's surge keyed South Haven's 24-7 second-quarter scoring burst, which game the Rams a 36-19 halftime lead in the Wolverine Conference game.
    Mattawan needs 2 OTs to topple P-Central
    Wednesday, January 09, 2008
    Gazette Staff Reports
    MATTAWAN -- The teams' records suggested Mattawan should have easily dispatched Portage Central in a Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference nondivisional boys' basketball game Tuesday night.
    Turned out there was nothing easy about it.
    Jim Goetz scored all three of Mattawan's points in the second overtime and the Wildcats escaped with a 48-46 victory.
    Skyler LaPlante scored a game-high 15 points to lead Mattawan, which improved to 5-1. Matt Goodwin and Josh Holman added 11 points apiece for the Wildcats, and Holman had a game-high 10 rebounds.
    ``It was a really interesting game,'' Mattawan coach Dan Hoff said. ``Neither team got a flow going.''
    It appeared P-Central (0-6) had plenty of flow going in the first overtime, when the Mustangs built a seven-point lead with 1:27 remaining. But Goetz hit a 3-pointer and Jonny Pettit hit a running layup late in the period to tie the game at 45.
    Goetz scored on a drive to the basket and hit the front end of a bonus free-throw situation in the second overtime to account for all of Mattawan's points.
