I sing this hymn evey Anzac Day and it still sends shivers down my spine. Im not religious person by far but this song does something for me deeply.
Hymn ? ?The recessional?
God of our fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far flung battle line,
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine ?
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget ? lest we forget!
The tumult and the shouting dies;
The captains and the kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget ? lest we forget!
Far called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget ? lest we forget!
If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe,
Such boastings as the Gentiles use,
Or lesser breeds without the Law ?
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget ? lest we forget!
For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard,
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard,
For frantic boast and foolish word ?
Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord!

April 25th is a day of nation importance for two reasons. One we remember those who died and two we acknowledge that Australia became a Nation back in the war to end all wars. It is hard to imagine back in 1915 that a unknown beach in the old ottoman empire would one day become a mecca of sorts to the young of Australia as they sort to recognise who we are and what we came from. To Me Anzac day is about remembering those who went to war and when faced with a huge battle didnt turn and run but stood up and were counted. A day where where your ansectors came from didnt matter all that mattered was the man to your left and right and the southern Cross. It is just a shame that the most times we stop to remember the good things of hamanity is after we have paid in blood for the right to mourn as we wish
THOSE HEROES THAT SHED THEIR BLOOD
AND LOST THEIR LIVES... YOU ARE
NOW LYING IN THE SOIL OF A FRIENDLY
COUNTRY. THEREFORE REST IN PEACE.
THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE
JOHNNIES AND MEHMETS TO US
WHERE THEY LIE SIDE BY SIDE HERE IN
THIS COUNTRY OF OURS... YOU, THE
MOTHERS, WHO SENT THEIR SONS FROM
FARAWAY COUNTRIES WIPE AWAY YOUR
TEARS; YOUR SONS ARE NOW LYING IN
OUR BOSOM AND ARE IN PEACE. AFTER
HAVING LOST THEIR LIVES ON THIS LAND
THEY HAVE BECOME OUR SONS AS WELL.'
KEMAL ATATURK
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed reading this thread very much. I know so little about your homeland so it was nice to read about Anzac Day.
