CBS has nuked "Jericho"--again.
On Friday, The network issued a statement declaring next Tuesday's episode -- intended as the show's season two swan song -- would serve as the drama's series finale. The show, which dealt with the fallout from an apparent nuclear attack on the U.S., was canceled last May by the network, only to be resurrected after fans mounted an intense peanut-centric campaign on its behalf.
CBS had hoped to build on that loyal core with a second season. Ratings, however, continued to disappoint.
"Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more," CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said in her statement. "We thank an engaged and spirited fan base for keeping the show alive this long, and an outstanding team of producers, cast and crew that went through creative hoops to deliver a compelling, high quality second season. We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try. We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We're proud of everyone's efforts."
Second season of "Jericho" aired Tuesdays at 10 p.m. and faced mostly repeats as competition, thanks to a WGA-caused shortage of originals. However, the strike drought might have also hurt the show, since CBS didn't have many original drama episodes in which to hype the return of "Jericho."
CBS Paramount Network TV produces "Jericho." It seems logical that the studio-- if it hasn't already done so-- will begin shopping the series to other networks which might be interested in a third season.
