Math Test

A Math Question:

I was asked this question the other night but could not answer it. I figured I knew where to find the answer, so here it is folks.

3 guys go into a hotel and ask how much for a room for the night, the clerk answers $30 so they each give the clerk $10.

Later the clerk realizes that he has made a mistake so he calls over the bellboy and tells him that he charged these 3 guys too much and gives the bellboy $5 to take back to them.

On the way up the elevator the bellboy gets to thinking ? 3 guys and $5, how do I divide that up evenly ?? So when he gets to the room he gives each guy a dollar and puts $2 in his pocket.

Now if each guy paid $10 and was given $1 back then they each paid $9 times 3 = $27. The bellboy only put $2 in his pocket.

27 + 2 = 29

What happened to the extra dollar?

That's pretty much it Gus.

The three guys give the clerk $30, he gives them $3 back so they have paid $27.

From that $27 the clerk puts $25 in the till and keeps the other $2

The $30 is made up of $25 in the till, $2 in the clerks pocket and $3 returned to the three guys.

I think by making it 3 guys, instead of 1 guy, paying for the room, the problem seems more difficult.

I had to simplify it, in order to see it in my noggin!

I guess the $25 (actual price) has to be part of it though!

They should have paid $25
They overpaid by $5
They are reimbursed $3
They are ripped off for $2
or...
They paid out $30
They are reimbursed $3
They are ripped off for $2
They are paid in full at $25

Probably one of those algebra sort of deals!
