first, buy the gas-sheilding conversion kit, haha. (i think you have it, as i don't see any slag on your welds)
on relatively thin-gauge sheet metal like that, just run some 0.025" wire, and don't do any pattern.
just push the puddle, at 45-degree inclination, with a little extra gas than normal, to pull some heat away... as you're pushing, speed up and slow down to keep the bead consistent.
and as always, practice, practice, practice.

How much do you have invested in your project versus what you might spend on a Comptech Icebox intake?

$10 bux for the sheet metal, $40 for the filter, intake arm was free.

Not too shabby.
How's the sound compared to the plastic Comptech Icebox? Do you have dyno results yet?
I like the performance and sound of the Icebox on my GSR but I always thought the unit looked cheap. A polished metal box that matched the short intake would have been a nice touch.
