Finally got to the bottom of this one...
I had an experience recently where my Sprinter died driving down the road, when starting from a stop.
I blew about 5 fuses, replaced them with 15 amp fuses, drove around for a few weeks, and then the truck finally died. When I tried to replace the fuse, they were blowing immediately.
I had the truck towed to the Dodge dealer in Norwood, MA... before bringing it in, I figured out the harness that was associated with a short circuit.
The moral to the story - there is a harness that (in my case after 20,000 miles) rubs the top of the intake manifold and chaffed off the insulation, making a short. I have seen this described on other boards - presumably a result of the vehicle being re-assembled in the USA.
