    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

Merry Christmas(or whatever you celebrate), everybody.

Well, that last one was a little bit bitchy, musta been depressed. That said, as long as you don't mind the imperfection of emulation(like tint probably leaning 15 points in one direction or another), a Raspberry Pi probably is the way to go. I do love having my consoles ready to go as is though, so maybe it was worth it.

Still getting games for the 2(increasingly getting outdated) handhelds as well, but for the most part I'm happy with 4th generation and prior gaming.

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

So, I changed jobs a few months back and it turned out to be a horrible decision im working to correct. So my life has been a bit of hell for a while. This being said, i just found out there is a bootleg Grandia version that was made for the NES. I even have video evidence lol.

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

There's a bootleg Final Fantasy 7 on the NES, doesn't meant these things are worth playing(though that one has a translation and a hack to make it more playable).

I've been keeping busy with the games I've got on the handhelds, and to make matters worse, no idea when I'll get around to it(I mean these are some seriously time consuming games), I wound up with a Switch(with 2 more seriously time consuming games...). All the while, I'm really missing the classic arcade style of my oldschool consoles as is.

Red face Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

It's amazing how just the two of you basically kept this thread from 2013 alive. Quite ironic too, considering Bojack has the longest history here as one of the oldest members.
It is certainly entertaining and fun to come back here from time to time, even if for just a short while.

Happy New Year to each and every one of you, BTW!

I wonder if any other old members will find this thread, or the board again, but hey, it has been nice either way!

Thank you for all the great memories and fun. I won't say farewell, 'cause it sems that Granaboard will last for friggin' forever!

    Cheers!

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

Welcome back, if you are. I would have just as long a history here myself, just changed the name.

So that was a rough couple of months. I think I can go the rest of my life without ever seeing a roleplaying/adventure game ever again. I don't think I've ever been nerdy enough for that genre anyway(that or I'm outgrowing that level or nerdiness ). Getting back to the oldschool consoles has been therapeutic by comparison.

    Arcade gaming for life.

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

Hello everybody! How have you all been?

It has been some 6 years since I posted, but I wanted to drop by to say I still remember this board and you guys very fondly, and it will always take a very special place in my heart. If I'm not mistaken we got Phaq, Bojack, Dawg, Dreamer and Nevan... Too bad we're still missing Xellos, OCB, Dragonrider and the others!

So, let's post an update on my life... Remember I said I wouldn't get married in 2013? Well, I did. You get 15 extra days of PTO for your honeymoon, that's why. (I shit you not.) Plus some other benefits. We're pragmatic. And I said yes on the condition that I still get to fuck her brains out pretty often, which I do. I'd like to say I'm just as depraved as I used to be, but you know what? I've got worse.

We're also expecting our first (and maybe only) daughter so it's going to be two very difficult/busy years, then 3 bad years, then things will gradually ramp up when I can actually talk to her about stuff that matters. I don't like young kids but it's a long-term investment.

Work-wise I now work as a senior R&D director for a multinational company; my work is about running and advising several development teams across the world for several projects. Not all of it is as fun as writing software myself (which I still do with a fraction of my time for my pet projects), but it pays the bills and it's alright; I can deliver a lot of value with my experience and dislike of overengineering.

I'm currently driving a Golf GTE (I wanted a good, fast car but at the same time an environmentally-conscious choice, and at the same time I didn't want to have a separate petrol car for long trips, so I got a PHEV). You Americans don't get this drivetrain for the VW Golf because of that Trump wanker, I'm sure.

Gaming-wise... I no longer have that much time for games, but I do buy whatever system I need to play the games that pique my attention. The latest stuff I've been playing is:

    ● The Witcher 3 (second time), my all-time favourite game now (sorry Grandia 2, but it's still in my top). I like everything about this game, from the fact it has a complex, deep, mature story that's tailored to my age, to focusing on an old man trying to save his daughter and not giving that much of a damn for saving the world, to not giving in to today's SJW fad and being just normal, to being extremely fun to play and detailed, to being a very sexualised world where your character has a complex relationship. Oh and the accents, visuals and music.

    ● Monster Boy. Fuck, I loved the RPG-esque Monster Boy games; this game is a dream come true, and my favourite platformer ever. (sorry Sonic; I liked Sonic Mania very much by the way, but Sonic games are otherwise shit nowadays).

    ● Zelda and Mario games for the Switch

And of course, I'm eagerly waiting for (and a major Kickstart supporter of) Shenmue 3. FINALLY. It'll pick up from where Shenmue 2 left, because if they let time pass Ryo would now be le Chad who conquers cute Chinese women through smooth talking (bollocks), his martial arts moves and buckets of money he made in forklift racing, gets their pixelated pussies flowing and then... goes to get more toy capsules and play arcade games.

Other than that, I've been travelling a lot for business and pleasure. I like to hike through different types of forests, drive through scenic routes, rent beautiful countryside cottages and visit the best gardens (my favourite being Mount Stewart in Ireland). Love Ireland and the North of Spain.

I hope to remember to come back in a few weeks to read about you guys!

    Cheers

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

By comparison, my life must be regressing. I'm listening to '70's AC/DC, watching '80's cartoons, and playing '90's Sega Genesis games.

Honestly, in the last 5 years or so, Phantasy Star IV shot up to my favorite JRPG. Before there was a Grandia series this game sees it's characters talking back to NPC's. Of course it's one where a major character gets killed, I don't know if that's still a hang up for you.

No RPG was going to make me lose my love for beat 'em ups though, and on that end, Streets of Rage 2 remains my all time favorite game.

The series was Wonder Boy/Monster World. They dropped the Wonder Boy title from Monster World IV, as you play an Arabian girl in that one. You wouldn't want to get into the whole Wonder Boy/Adventure Island thing either.

As I'm stuck with a Switch, I've yet to pick up Sonic Mania myself, where my sole interest is that it's a 2D game. 3D platforming in general can go fuck itself.

Shenmue wouldn't be my type of series today, but for those that are still a fan, you may have been missing out if you haven't gotten around to the Yakuza series.

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

    Hi!

Nah, I no longer mind if a major character dies, but I'm going to be pretty pissed off and find it rather pointless if the ending is not happy. Call me shallow ^^ .

That's right, the saga is Wonder Boy, with many confusing and illogical names and numbers. I loved Wonder Boy III Dragon's Trap and its remake, and Wonder Boy 5/Monster Boy 3 as well as Monster World 4 are two of my favourite MegaDrive games, probably second only to Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I enjoy the occasional 3D platformer (Super Mario Galaxy, I do find these are pure genius, Mario games in general I don't care that much in 2D but love in 3D, also liked Kameo), but for Sonic, I've only liked Adventure mostly because of the visuals, music, adventure theme and production quality for its day and era, but a proper Sonic game is a 2D game. It took Sega ages to realize, and they had to hire somebody else to do a proper job. It looks like Sega is still ran by idiots.

I didn't get into the Yakuza ones, the theme doesn't do that much for me. Would probably not get into Shenmue 3 today if it weren't for the fact I loved Shenmue 1 and 2 (and they were also technically spectacular), now I'm more of a Euro RPG/high fantasy adventure guy.

And in 2D I like Metroidvanias best. I've also played Treasure Adventure World and have the latest Shantae in my library pending a try. Do you know of any good ones like Monster Boy that I may have missed?

Music-wise most of what I hear now are piano pieces, especially Chopin's (specially loved: B.150, B.56, B.49, Op 9 #1, Op. 34 #1, Op 18, Op 10 #3, Op 10 #12, Op 69 #2, Op 32 #2, ...), other romantic era composers (Tchaikovsky is adored) and soundtracks (my favourite one is The Village by James Newton Howard).

And as for watching, I recently got back into anime, just those with adult stories, mostly thanks to Your Name, which I loved, and I'm currently watching Erased. I also watch TV series (Stranger Things, Money Heist, Versailles, The Frankenstein Chronicles, The Alienist, The New Legends of Monkey...).

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

Sometimes the loading at this board would lose a race to snails...

Anyway, unlike Final Fantasy 7, the character in Phantasy Star IV has enough personality to actually like, and it's fairly early on, maybe 1/4, if that far, in.

For Metroidvanias, there's a couple of sites with listings:
    Metroidvania.com
    Metroidvanias

Off the top of my head, I'd just toss out the GBA and DS(and the 1 PS1) Castlevania games.
In a way, River City Ransom as well. It's mostly considered a beat 'em up, but it has a series of connected screens, and you can't advance until you've beaten the right boss enemies.
Otherwise there are a lot of free PC games in those listings as well as indie stuff. I've gotten Axiom Verge on the Vita(gifted digital store money, otherwise I personally don't care for the concept of digital distribution in general)

To be fair to Yakuza, you play as the nicest guy that ever got involved in organized crime. I gave the original a shot, it was far too narrative to my liking. Tells it's story well though, for those that don't mind that sort of thing, but I'll always be an arcade gamer at heart. Which is why I don't care for 3D platformers. How often are you in mortal danger if you miss a jump? Never felt right to me, going back to Mario 64.

I'm re-watching the '87 TMNT series. I like it. Probably wouldn't in the pretentious teenager to early 20's period of my life. You just gotta realize those cartoons from back then leaned more toward Looney Tunes than gritty-take-themselves-seriously-comics, or whatever it is people praise Batman '92 and Gargoyles over.

    Re: Granaboard 2013 virtual gathering

I've been through the Gaucamelee games recently, 2 can have some really frustrating elements, but that's a pair of "metroidvania's" that have a single retail package.

You know what, it was cheap enough that I took a chance, and fuck the haters, I actually like Sonic Forces. A few hiccups, but a solid gameplay engine nonetheless.

I got a bunch of Switch games now. About the only thing I'm looking forward to now is the Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead remakes. Streets of Rage 4, if they make a retail release, I'm never going to get on board with digital.

I don't think I have it in me for more RPG's anymore. They're getting more and more involved, and I'm starting to miss the more straightforward, sidequest-less ones, if anything. I think I'd just rather not in general though. Sick of giving 10's of hours to that damn genre. While I'm away from it for the next few months, I'm really missing my Genesis and it's arcade/fast paced action heavy library.

That said, if they had the brass to make a retail package out of the recent Grandia compilation, I'd go for it.
