Scientist 'has cloned human'

A scientist has claimed to have successfully cloned the first human baby - apparently born to a 31-year-old mother on Boxing Day.

But scientists are highly sceptical about her claim because she is linked to a French sect that believes life on earth was created by extra-terrestrials.

Independent verification is said to be underway but has yet to be established.

Dr Brigitte Boisselier is a chemist who heads Clonaid, a company set up in 1997 to create cloned humans.

She says that the world's first human clone, a 7lb baby girl named Eve, born at 11.55am on Thursday to an American mother.

She would not say in which country the baby was born but said the child is a clone of the woman who donated the DNA for the cloning process.

If confirmed, that would make the child an exact genetic duplicate of her mother. The woman is said to have been previously married and to already have another child.

Dr Boisellier announced the birth at a press conference, saying she wanted to protect the mother's and child's privacy, but adding she hoped they would talk to the press soon.

She said: "The baby is very healthy. She's doing fine. We're very happy parents."

She said the baby will go home in three days, and an independent expert will take DNA samples to prove she had been cloned.

She has also recruited the former science editor of America's ABC News, now a freelance journalist, to act as an independent adjudicator of the evidence.

Those test results are expected within a week after the testing.

Dr Boisellier further claimed that the baby was cloned from a skin cell, and said four more human clones are due to be born, one to a lesbian couple in northern Europe, one in north America and two in Asia.

She said two of the four about to be born would be clones of dead children.

Most scientists, already sceptical of Boisellier's ability to produce a human clone, are likely to demand to know exactly how the DNA testing was done before they believe the announcement.

Clonaid was founded in the Bahamas in 1997 by Claude Vorilhon, a former French journalist and leader of a group called the Raelians.

Vorilhon and his followers claim aliens visiting him in the 1970s revealed they had created all life on Earth through genetic engineering.

Dr Patrick Dixon, a leading expert on the ethics of human cloning, described the news as "totally inevitable" but warned that it would mark a watershed when the world would suddenly realise that science is spinning out of control.

He said: "There's a global race by maverick scientists to produce clones, motivated by fame, money and warped and twisted beliefs.

"Today's announcement is totally inevitable and we can expect a number of other births of clones over the next few weeks."

He said that physicians across the world were propelled by "private passions and weird emotions" with the determination to deliver a cloned baby to any man or woman who wished to "duplicate themselves or recover the dead".

He said the cloning industry, and today's announcement, was worth tens of millions of pounds.


Well, this is:

Cloning sheep is one thing, but now they've got onto humans?! This could lead onto humans creating weapons like the Evas in NGE. Sure there are some possible useful elements (like more organs), but creating humans for harvesting organs is just sick.
The article posted doesn't explain this, but it is one step towards that future. Mankind is abusing it's knowledge, and leading itself into a world of darkness.

Bah, I don't believe that. Coming from a sect, they would do anything to trap you in, including inventing bullshit. Cloning humans IS possible, and I agree that it's not right, but I don't think a stupid sect could do that. The problem with that is that to be a sect follower you have to be some sort of retard, which is often incompatible with Science, so unless some mad, immoral, insane scientist helps them, I don't think they will have any success.

However, human clones will be done by somebody someday, and sadly we can't stop it. Very bad things may come out of this; harvesting organs with real, complete humans is highly immoral (I think it's ok to cultivate individual organs with mother cells to save lives), so is cloning somebody in particular, etc., but this is not the main problem. The main problem will come out of experimentation to create stronger, faster, and maybe stupider modified humans to grow up as soldiers, or some kind of monsters. Heck, what could happen to humanity if such a power fell in [fundamentalist] muslim hands? They might create an army of monsters for their jihad crap.

Prof. Dr. Stephen Hawking thinks that humanity will come to an end by its own hands in less than 1000 years because of its irresponsible use of Science.

The child (if its even true) will die soon. The Cell is older than the body and the body will try to catch up with the cells age, but then the cell will see that the body is growing and will grow with it. The body will not be able to catch the original cells age and it will age too quickly to have anything short of a lifespan and die.

But making a copy of someone is twisted, especially if they wanted to donate things. Absolutely disgusting...

Cloning will only be bad if we are irresponsible with it. But I don't see why it's so immoral. It's just making some one who's identical to their mother. Now if we do start say, harvesting organs then it might be a problem. Other than that, I'm not worried about it. Especially if it still takes a human mother and nine months to make the kid then it loses it's "Clone Wars" power. So eh, some one's cloning peeps, no big deal to me.

Good point. But if it's true that cloned creatures get old soon, Scientists might find a way to "edit" ages. That would bring some good and bad things - maybe they discover a way for us to live 200 years, but maybe they can use it for something evil. As for the clone wars, I'm not especially worried about that - creating humanoid monsters (or any sort of monster for the case) is my worry.

I don't think its right for people to be cloned. There is really no good reason for it, and it would be sick if they just made people to harvest organs. People should stop trying to play god.

Yea my dad told me about this, I believe it is clearly bullshit.

The only good cloning I believe is if they grew organs in a test tube incase someone got sick they could use it for stuff like heart disease and other such things.
