    Yeah, I understand.

One of the positives of being a musician...no freakin' rules to follow regarding gear selection...if it makes the sound you're after, be happy, nobody can say it's "wrong". forums

Our comparison of 417s with competing 12" Celestions got me to wondering, so...

Here's a Photochopped comparison of response for the two. I chose the G 12-65 for its' popularity and increased power handling similar to the -8H. Despite the very different construction, there's considerable similarity too.

The LF rolloff obviously differs considerably below 200Hz (~ open G string and below). As does the HF rolloff, dip, and peak. The HF differences won't matter as much if there's little or nothing over 5kHz coming out of your guitar amp though...

Keep in mind the differing sources for the plots, i.e. unknown resolution and smoothing...

I'll not pretend to show a favorite, just thought a visual might help quantify the subjectivity one encounters. forums

I love the low-end response I get from my 417's..nothing else I have tried gives me that 'chunk' and 'beef'.
And , I use open back 2x12 Avatar cabs. I may put the closed back cab backs on them to get more.

Ever get a chance to try that ER-12?

I gather it took a bit of time to get shipped- as I said with my sitution I make commitments to do very litle. I'm dependent on an Ebayer to get stuff out.

Oh, no problem. I have not had a chance to use it. The place I live has very strict HOA rules and especially on noise. I can't get the volume I need, so I rarely play thru thru my amp. It looks interesting and I am curious on how it will sound. Did we find any better stats on this model? The one web page I found, probably already posted in this thread was somewhat difficult to read.

Can I have that in laymans terms?
All the Altec spec sheets I posted here, and likely were posted before
that, shows the cone Depth of the 417 and 917, at different inches, 6'', 5.6'' or someting etc..

    I love this Thread!
