Hello, New to this forum, long time audiophile. I have never had a pr of Altec's and figure its time.
I found a pr of Urei 811 speakers nearby and knowing that cabinet was made for a sofit, Ifigure I would build 620 cabinets and use the exsisting time alighned crossover. Then I found a guy locally that has Stonehenge III cabinets at a good price.
I dont mind building the 620's or stonehenge V. How much will I gain with the bigger cabinet.
I will be using a Modded Dynaco ST70 and probably will go 300b SET soon.
Whats some thoughts on this my room is 15 x 14 with a 10" opening into a larger room 14 x 24
Thanks
Bob

It really depends on what you're after, I think. I don't have time to check all this, but I think the Stonehenge three will give you about 35 or 40 Hz, the 620 or "Stonehenge V" another 5 Hz or so. The "V" is in quotes because, as I recall, it is not an Altec design, but rather an Iconic design that replicates the 620 volume in a Stonehenge style enclosure. It is said to take response down to 30 Hz, but that's an extended bass shelf style of tuning, and I don't like it that much. In some rooms it sounds like a big hunk in the bass, although if I understand your room description correctly, it may not be a problem there.
Any of the above will make a fine sounding speaker, but I like the 604 in a smaller cabinet and if I were after deep bass I would use a subwoofer and the UREI cabinet. It is a resistive port design, something that is pretty hard for us amateurs to do correctly. I think the cutoff was 50Hz. I'm guessing that cabinet will give you very tight boomless bass through the upper bass and lower midrange, and it is small enough to support the upper midrange well. I would run this full range with the tube amp and use another amp and subwoofer with a variable low pass-only crossover that could be dialed in to complement the UREI. I've used the UREI 525 and JBL sub1500's this way. If you can spare the room room you might like the JBL 2245 in a 10-12 cu ft cabinet based on the 1983 article by Greg Timbers (and co-author) that can be found at the Lansing Heritage web site. There's also the Velodyne bass management crossover to consider for greater dialability.

Thanks for the response, From you perspective you seem to think the Urei cabinet is good. I would be able to veneer the cabinets to make them look better and I already have a good sub. I could also build some solid stands to get them at the right hight...
