Notice the UNIQUE inverted glass nipple at the very top of the tube, which serves to hold the top of the plate structure steady.
    Wow!

You made me look closer, now i'm noticing the machine screw and nut that clamps the internal assembly to the glass "plug" at the base. It's easy to see how that package was inserted in the envelope before evacuation and sealing. Even new, those must have been a fairly costly tube, labor intensive assembly. Neat stuff!

During WW2, a lot of women were employed making tubes for the war effort. Except, when they were undergoing their menstrual cycles, in which case, they didn't build tubes !! There was something transmitted through their skin, that goofed up the tubes. I learned this from Bob Fulton, speaker designer, owner of Fulton Musical Industries ( 1925-1988 ). R.I.P. Bob !!

Might cause problems finding tubes for restorations that are "period correct".

Those two 845s are manufactured by "United Electronics Company" out of my home state, New Jersey, perhaps Newark as I recall. That tube is also called the " United 945".

Notice the UNIQUE inverted glass nipple at the very top of the tube, which serves to hold the top of the plate structure steady.

United Electronics just put ALTEC's logo on their manufactured tubes, very common back then. Cool to see today.

I have a similarly structured United 945 on my desk that was made 43rd week of 1943, and it actually has silver flashing, but no cylindrical pill box. Likely that pill box serves as a getter, I'm also just guessing. Those tubes are most probably 1952 manufacture, maybe 19th week.

Another LAYER of information, new to me : UNITED ELECTRONICS Company 845 / 945

A friend with more experience than I tells me UNITED ELECTRONICS COMPANY was just a tube-rebrander, and never manufactured any tubes !! He says the tube with inverted nipple holding the 845's top plate was made by Western Electric Co.

On eBay this past month, two such 845 tubes , ( branded as United Electronics 845 ) sold for $1,100 each. SO, there is likely some validity to it being Western Electric made, at THAT price for one "untested" tube from "an estate".

The people of the Far East seem to know all of this, judging from their bid frequency and amounts bid.
