tweeter with no surround?!

Any clues here? I have never heard of such a thing!

I found it while looking for a tweeter for my Altec model 85 (I know, it's not vintage, but they sound fine and are compact enough to use as computer speakers (with a sub of course)

I can easily switch to the 604-8G's behind me for the critical listening!

looks like bits of the rotted foam surround still hanging.
Got a pair of Jensen "free cone" woofers.

Those really were designed to operate without surrounds - I remember seeing new ones out of the box just like that, and the catalogues showed them that way...not sure what they were thinking. Perhaps it was a pre-piezo attempt at greater HF response.

I thought the foam had rotted also.

Seems like a crazy idea to me (maybe a lot of "breakthrough" ideas are though!),or maybe they had a stiffer spider to keep it centered, but then it would seriously dampen the HF response anyway I would guess. Either that or there's a huge voice coil gap for it to hang into! I really can't imagine a uniform HF out of it though, allowing the cone to not only move in and out, but wiggle around at will also!

I seriously though that it was just another guy that doesn't know what he's talking about and just trying to make some money on a "rare" item.

There MAY be an extra spider back there. Dual compliant spiders with adequate separation can control the "flop" without killing the overall compliance.

Peper remembers much better than the human mind..in my defense, don't hink I ever owned one or wanted too...sound like something I could blow up real good...
