The sound was awesome before the upgrade, don't remember the picture well but it was probably better than the blown up 35MM on the big screens today. As for the equipment, I bought it, well most of it anyway years ago. back when I was just about the only guy in town chasing the stuff and long before the internet ran the prices out of sight. I left the preamps behind unfortunately as I have since discovered that the input transformers make wonderful MC stepup transformers. I actually did some dumpster diving after they closed the place and ended with a couple of Ballentyne t-25s that must have been in some used bases they moved in for the split. ahhhhh for the good ol' days, when there were not so many of us.

Since the early 50's and 60's many films were shot in 70mm . Here is what those cameras looked like.
1 TODD-AO 70MM Mitchell BFC 150 for a deeper curved screen.The Mitchell company would become Panavision .

2 TODD-AO 70MM

3 ARRIFLEX 70MM 2009 CAMERA ( smaller but not much bigger than 35mm except for film spool.

You're welcome Chris.
That's just a part of the Altec users section of the old SP archive. Lots of other reading there too;

Re: Voice of the theater only
Sound definition and film resolution go hand in hand.
The VOTT with it's high definition due to mechanical construction and cabinet horn loaded type is and will remain the best .
SDS 70mm, 70mm,35mm will remain higest resolution compared to DLP.I have to exclude IMAX since it is not anamorphic but a square picture and cannot show long feature films with out having a torticoli.

I saw Dances With Wolves at the Forum Horizon in Paris. 70mm print. Very impressive. Proabably the best cinema sound I've ever heard, tho some of my buddies used to argue that the Max Linder cinema in Paris was better.
The Forum opened in the mid 80s and was built as a THX house. The Color Purple opened it. Don't know what was behind the screen, but it was very, very good. Likely JBL. Also saw Aliens and a few others there. Superb sound. Big, open, never boomy or overblown. Amazing detail, too. Really well built system all the way around.
Saw Titanic at the Max Linder on its open show. Alas a 35mm print. Went up to the booth after the show and chatted with the projectionist (having been one myself). He said what I heard was Dolby Digital, why not stick around and he'd run it in DTS this time. I did, and it was different. Fun!
Done right, cinema sound is a dream come true.

Et, qui, le Grand REX. Magnifique! But I didn't mention it because I rarely went there. Always V.F., you know - never V.O.
Did see Who Framed Roger Rabbit at the REX. Amazing. The screen is huge! Great projection, great sound. Huge and beautiful place.
Back in the 1950, 60s (IIRC) they had a dog kennel in the basement. You could come to the cinema with your dog and leave him in the kennel during the show. Now that's cool!
Re: Voice of the theater only
As to the link of info you gave me bfish, I noticed the mentioning of using the baffle wings on the side of the cabinets to net a 100% gain in the LF! That is pretty impressive lo-tech there!
Never knew the gain would be that immense or large.

Yes and they have dancing waters in between shows.
The other theater with a large screen is the Paris Gaumont. The French have it together.
With first run movies. How come our single screens are exempt from first run is beyond me.
It's though we have our feet in cement blocks with our fingers in our noses.
