As one who is always looking for a free lunch all I want is for someone who knows more than I to tell me "keep your 501's.......

Fair enough. I'm a firm believer in the KISS system, so keep the 501s, I've used them in various systems off n' on since their release over 40 years ago and they work fine in a HIFI/HT app when a by-pass capacitor chosen to 'taste' is hooked across the pot to let through the extreme HF unimpeded after it's been set, i.e. the pot's attenuation combined with the by-pass cap is the casual DIYer's CD horn EQ.
