No it's not. The original was manufactored by C.P. Moyen. That stuff there is water based latex. The Moyen website lists "cloth sealers" . As to which one or what flavor Altec bought would be anybodys guess. And it may have changed through the years and with diifferent lines.

    Re: Surround goop

Actually, some Altec drivers did use water-based dope. One can see from the references below that different products (only some of which were Moyen products) were employed in specific applications. Factor in that these references were guides for a single (later day) point in time and the listed products were not necessarily all historically available for the duration of Altec doped cloth, and the question of there being a "right" dope for general purposes becomes moot.

Inspection of a wide variety of doped Altec surrounds from varying periods easily exposes the differences. The latex variants have less mass and appear more as a continous surface when dry. Latex dope is much easier to apply, and generally only takes one coat. It doesn't run or sag either.

One has to assume they had a reason to use different dopes on different drivers...

The absence of the typically runny 414/416s from the above references suggests yet another variant, though we'd need the missing reference to know what it was.

    Re: Surround goop

You are correct as usual Mr. Fish. But the instructions are listed for alot of ER stuff. The nagging question to me is what project is GM working on ? If he's trying to fix the cone sag on those 421's, use the water based latex on the back of the surrounds and ajust the cone height with some paper towels. If it's something else, use the thinner based dope. ie: 416's or 515's. The latex will give you a higher qts and will dry "tighter". The thinner based dope loser with a lower qts. Hope that this was some help to somebody.

Correct, the product number I have is VS6020.

Yes, this is why I asked, though in retrospect I should have been more specific and asked if this was the EPA equivalent to the more toxic original, i.e. is this what GPA/reconers use on vintage Altecs now.

Non Altec related, I want to coat paper rolled surrounds of a bunch of old drivers I have stored to protect them against cracking when finally firing them up.

The 421s were just fine after some time in the sun the other day.

Good to know, thanks! Don't want a thick dope or I'd just use pure silicone. I take it then that thinning latex surround dope with Flotex to mimic the Moyen is a bad plan?

    TIA,

That LSS will be fine for that. Less intrusive (for you and the cone).

    Re: Surround goop

OK, thanks! Kind of what I was thinking too. I just didn't want something that would change the surround's physical properties too much.
