So pissed off right now!!!

My nephew wanted me to do a couple of DJ gigs for him this summer (he does fireworks shows) I agreed because the going rate is 300 to 500 for the night.

I then decided I didnt want to risk blowing out the Altec 421-8h series II 15's in my cabinets, so I bought a cheap pair of seismic audio 15" earth shakers to put in the cabs.

I take the cabs apart, unbolt the altecs, and they wont come out, basically glued in there. I tried everything to get them loose, finally had to try and gently pry them out, which of course put just enough torque on one of the speakers to move the voice coil right to the magnet, so now its blown.

UUUGGGGHHHHH Anyone know of GOOD online reconing kits?

I think Great Plains will sell you kits. Check there. Sometimes you can still find NOS kits.

Next time, they make something called a painter's tool which is a sharpened 3" putty knife with a pick end on one side and a round cut-out for cleaning paint rollers. they work great for all sorts of projects.

What? How does prying make anything shift? What exactly shifted? Did the basket bend? I can't see how a re-cone kit would do anything for a rubbing voice coil, something isn't concentric anymore.

I second having a real finish carpenter's "sash knife" or sash bar in the tool box for times like this ..

This was my first thought and gently prying won't bend an Altec frame.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Heat can distort a voice coil, making it out-of-round. A recone will fix that rub. Sagging cones from being mounted in same position for years can be fixed by recone too. FWIW, Altecs are so precise if you only push on one side of a cone they can rub. Try pushing uniformly. If in doubt have 'em checked at GPA.

Yes he's wrong on that. Most likely he has cone sag and they rubbed before removal. I was just addressing in some cases a recone fixes rub. But not if it's a concentric issue.
