Wardsweb, very elegant and well crafted project.
Would you mind sharing the construction details of the curved grilles?

Or put another way, Thank you for destroying my dream of becoming a DIY speaker builder.

Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.
Ward do you have any measurements of these speakers ? I also like the grills and want to build something like that to put the finishing touches on my project, but I'm concerned with the metal resonating..Have you heard anything WRT to the metal grills resonating/vibrating ?I have always been told that you don't want any kind of metal in front of the woofers as they will tend to resonate/vibrate.So I was considering a wooden frame wrapped with the grill cloth around the perimeter of the dual 416 woofers.. I just love the look of those though !
If you mean acoustic measurements, no. If you mean dimensions, I do have them somewhere. I just have to dig them up as I started this project back in 2004.
The grills do not resonate. I don't know if it is because they are under tension or if the edge banding being spring metal over rubber helps to dampen them. Pro gear has used metal grills for decades without issue.
Very nice work Ward. You got skeels for sure.
If I remember from your web site, you are a car guy as well?
Interesting how cars and speakers have similarities when it comes to DIY.
Cars tend to "expand" more however.......and the performance is more measurable.
Excellent work!
