Enjoying Altec Speakers since 1972
Fun find! They do look nice.
I notice that the one with the internals pictured has a metal brace on the back of the 811 horn - just before the driver. Mine don't have the braces. His 803As are dated June 1957, and my '57 803As are dated May 1957 - only one month apart. So I wonder if the braces were a last minute addition? Or some mod that Mr Paul did?
And speaking of mods, I notice that all the taps on the crossover have wires on them. I wonder if he put a rotary switch somewhere on the back panel to select the HF attenuation? It also notes that he added jacks on the back panel. Unfortunately there is no photo showing what he did. As originally made by Altec, I guess you were supposed to drill your own hole for routing the speaker cable.

That brace was commonly used on Altecs. May have been a dealer mod in this case since it was a standard part?
Your neighbors called. They like your music.
I am rapidly getting the opinion that no two 820s are identical. Unless perhaps one could find a pair that were made on the same day. Perhaps these were.
If the brace was a stock Altec part, I wonder if GPA or some old timey former Altec shop would still have a pair of NOS, or even nice used, ones laying around? Probably like finding needles in a haystack.

Look like Lot 656 to me. Sold at the estate sale for $4375 plus any related expenses.
