Hi All,
I don't post too often, but read the forum daily... Just wanted to share with fellow members my latest acquisition - two 604-8G's in home-made cabinets!
Local pickup - 2 hours round trip. The seller did not know too much about these speakers; his father-in-law purchased them new in the late 70's... He had never hooked them up and was tired of them taking up valuable garage space. I arrived after work to check them out and was initially disappointed... On the first speaker the glue between the surround and approximately half the woofer cone had come free, and the HF phram ohm'd open. Couldn't hook this one up to test. The second speaker HF driver was good, however, the LF ohm'd open. Couldn't hook this one up to test out either...
$400 later we loaded the pair up into my family hauler. I thought this was a fair price for non-working speakers that I could not listen to before getting them home...
Today was my day off, and these bad-boys have been playing tunes since noon! Lots of useful tips on the board to facilitate a quick fix for each symptom. Thanks all! Here's a few pics of them temporarily setup in my living room (wife is at work today ) Pay no mind to the ugly hand-me-down sofa or extremely unsafe speaker stands. I initially had the cabs on the carpet and they sounded horrible - I needed to isolate them somewhat...such a difference.
These 604-8Gs:
Original Cones, "light" HF diaphragm, non-tangerine phase plug, sequential serial numbers. Cabinets are ugly-ish (but free) and are ~9.5 cubic ft.
