    Re: An Altec Time-line

With all due respect and no offense toward the OP:

There are enough inaccuracies in that piece that it should be removed from the web.

The Western Electric 555 Receiver was a wood horn?

The original 601 duplex was 12 inch?

I couldn't read on any further.

Stick with the time line at Lansing Heritage. The folks that put that together actually knew what they were talking about and were proud enough of their work to proof read it and check it for accuracy.

I am no expert in the historical details of WE & Altec but offer this Altec document that agrees with the pre-eminence of the 12 inch 601: Altec Lansing DUPLEX? Loudspeaker Systems

Also, the first WE 555 Receivers were apparenty fitted to wooden horns made by Victor Talking Machine Company: Western Electric 13A Horn

I am of course always open to correction.

I promise, that is incorrect. The 601 was a stamped steel frame, field coil energized 604.

Early versions of the first permanent magnet duplex, the 604, were built on the same stamped frame, i've held one in my hands and studied it quite closely. My understanding is that surviving examples are probably as rare as FC 601's.

Many thanks to Steve Schell for posting these pics and thread: Holy grail driver

Also refer to the 1943 catalog in the library: http://www.lansingheritage.org/image...943/page04.jpg

The author of that timeline has confused some facts, and gotten others just plain wrong.

    Trust this: http://www.audioheritage.org/html/hi...c/timeline.htm

FWIW, the Altec 601A might well have been the first 12 inch duplex, but that would come nearly a decade later, and were all PM motors, no field coil 12 inch duplexes that i'm aware of.

FWIW: I would like to add that the '601 Document' was originally submitted by Don McRitchie. It appears there were two sizes of 601. It would be nice to clear-up this confusion.

    Re: An Altec Time-line

    I'm not confused.

Altec didn't build a production 12 inch speaker until 1948-1949.

601C is late in the game, white painted frame. There were "A" and "B" versions too. They all came after the introduction of the 3000 tweeter, 1950's stuff.

    Re: An Altec Time-line

Bowtie is correct. 601 was a field coil 15. LATER Altec reused the number on a 12 with tweeter.

People trying to throw together the timeline without full research did not know that.

At least nobody confuses the 803 woofer with the 803 multicell. But that's another post, and why the 803B and 416A are essentially the same speaker.

"The Western Electric 12A and Western Electric 13A horns"

were supposed to be used together.

    Re: An Altec Time-line

Part of why I enjoy this forum so much is the knowledge and attitude of the regulars. There's always some new or reincarnated information to analyze, and this team does it with mutual respect and good attitudes. So many other forums are lacking in these qualities.
