Leaning towards cloning the original design, albeit with thicker ply - have found some 19 layer, 25mm Russian Birch that is seriously expensive, but I love the look. I will let you all know what I decide on.

Hard to improve on Baltic Birch. If even minimally braced, the stock enclosure with BB should outshine the original. One critical area to look at for improvement is the joinery (or lack thereof) where the top meets the bottom cabinet. A few dadoes or using a modern sealing material would improve on that quite a bit. Also, the original construction of the inset "kickboard" leaves a lot to be desired. There are more than a few ways to do that part differently.
Yeah, like most vented speakers up till the 'monkey coffins' era, these were designed with some leakage factored in to keep manufacturing cost down as much as practical.

I personally didn't like them as much as the originals.. I thought they were a little more bright up top..And IIRC I think Zilch bypassed the MF adjustment. So they give you less tonal control...I may be wrong on that it has been awhile since I tried them. YMMV however.. Like with all audio testing and determining sound preferences, it is really something that should be done for ones self. As what sounds good to me may not sound good to you and so on..
